Grant Declination: Gannett Foundation (Milwaukee)

We recently learned that our $5,000 grant proposal submitted to the Gannett Foundation on behalf of BDPA Milwaukee chapter was declined. Our proposal was originally submitted via the community engagement coordinator at KARE 11.

The declination letter read as follows:

Dear Mr. Hicks,

Thank you for submitting a proposal for a 2015 Gannett Foundation grant. The need for funding is clearly high, as the amount of requests we received greatly exceeded the funds available. This made the funding decisions extremely difficult, and unfortunately we are unable to fulfill your funding request at this time.

All of the requests were worthy of funding and provide essential services to the community. As I mentioned before, the decision making was not easy. Our goal is to assist a variety of community needs, so we do not fund the same organization in consecutive years.

Also keep in mind that we do not provide funds for scholarships or endowments, capital expenditures (including equipment), general operating expenditures (including salaries), start-up monies for programs or one-time events. All of our grants must be designated for a specific program within the organization.

We have awarded all of our grants for 2015; our next deadline for submitting funding requests will be February 15, 2016.

Thank you for the work you do in the community. We appreciated the opportunity to review the materials.

Sincerely,
Megan Precht
Community Engagement Coordinator
KARE 11

Grant Proposal: Gannett Foundation (Milwaukee)

BDPA Education and Technology Foundation worked in collaboration with BDPA Milwaukee chapter (president, Carmen Giles) to submit a $5,000 grant proposal to the Gannett Foundation. We requested funding to support the chapter's Student Information Technology Education & Scholarship (SITES) project. The chapter seeks to train 25 students in STEM-related curriculum over the course of the year. BDPA Milwaukee chapter has already won a $5,000 grant award from the Helen Bader Foundation.

BDPA Milwaukee Leadership Team
BDPA Milwaukee was recently named 'Comeback Chapter of the Year' for its accelerated growth and commitment to students, members and corporate sponsors. Last year, BDPA Milwaukee sponsored local high school students to compete in the National BDPA High School Computer Competition. Successful funding from the Gannett Foundation will allow them to bring another team to Washington DC later this year.

We encourage all BDPA chapters to reach out to us if they need funding support for the SITES program in their area. Our process is well documented. For now, let's all simply wish 'good luck' to BDPA Milwaukee chapter!

Grant Declination: The Gannett Foundation

We learned that our $13,570 grant proposal to The Gannett Foundation was denied. We sought the funding to support youth education programs in New York. It turns out that for the deadline for funding in New York passed on August 25. The folks at Gannett Foundation wrote:

Dear Wayne,

Thank you for your proposal to the Gannett Foundation. It was reviewed by a committee of employees from USA WEEKEND and Gannett Company.

Unfortunately, we are unable to support this request due to receiving the proposal after the deadline. It is never easy to say 'no' to worthwhile projects such as yours.

I'm sorry we cannot assist you, but wish you success in securing funds from other sources. Thank you and for letting us know about your activies and goals, and for taking the time to submit a proposal to the Gannett Foundation. Please check our website later in the year for our 2009 priorities.

Sincerely,
Laura MacFie

Ms. MacFie was kind enough to give me a call to talk about our grant proposal. We intend to try again in advance of the February 2009 deadline.
