Grant Declination * Texas Instruments Foundation (Houston)

BDPA Education and Technology Foundation (BETF) and BDPA Houston chapter learned that our $7,500 grant proposal was declined by the Texas Instruments Foundation. We were seeking funds for the 2016 Student Information Technology Education & Scholarship (SITES) program being implemented this year by the chapter.

The declination letter read as follows:

Wayne

Thank you for submitting your proposal to Texas Instruments. We enjoyed learning about your organization and your work. While we appreciate the value and importance of your mission, we regret that we are unable to fund your request for support at this time.

We would like to respond affirmatively to all requests, however, we receive far more proposals than can possibly be supported. We appreciate the thought and time that went into the development of your application, and we wish you success in accomplishing your program goals.

Sincerely,
Andy Smith, Executive Director
Texas Instruments Foundation

BETF will continue to seek out funds for our BDPA Houston chapter!

The guests on the August 13th show:

Dr. Mackale Joyner - software engineer, Texas Instruments - Mack Joyner is a software engineer for Texas Instruments. 17 years ago he was a high school senior trained by BDPA Kansas City chapter to compete in the National BDPA High School Computer Competition (HSCC) championship. He credits that BDPA experience with affirming his desire to pursue a career in software engineering. BDPA made a vital impact on his education endeavors as his participation in the national HSCC competition enhanced his college application to Rice University.

The door that the BDPA helped open at Rice subsequently led to other doors being opened, which enabled Mack to complete his PhD in Computer Science at Rice University. Dr. Joyner's research interests include developing compilation strategies for object-oriented languages in high-performance scientific computing. Dr. Joyner was simply a high schooler in Kansas City when BDPA met him. Now he is one of the top high performance computing experts in the world. Dr. Joyner is one of the reasons that BDPA exists! I hope that all BDPA members enjoy his story as much as we do. You can follow BDPA on Twitter -- @BDPA

Texas Instruments Foundation

The Texas Instruments Foundation, established in 1952 and incorporated in 1964, was built on the idea that their communities are their greatest resources and should share in TI's success. The TI Foundation, funded by TI, is a separate, 501(c)(3) organization. It comprises a 10-member board, which meets quarterly to determine what grants to support. In 2008, the TI Foundation paid $7.8 million in grants and matching gifts.

The TI Foundation established a matching gifts program in 1970 to encourage U.S. employees, retirees and directors to contribute to public and private educational institutions. TI encourages their donations by matching their support to eligible education as well as arts and cultural groups – up to $10,000 per person per category each year. Their matching gifts program continues to evolve. In 2008, the program began offering the ability to apply for matching funds online in addition to phone or mail.

Applications for TI grants are currently accepted online. Unsolicited charitable funding is reserved for 501(c)(3) non-profits, primarily in the Dallas area, that support or promote any of our giving initiatives. TI and the TI Foundation focus giving in key areas important to their company and their communities.

One of the key areas is Education. TI Foundation seeks to increase the number of U.S. high school graduates who are math- and science-capable with algebra-based initiatives for eighth-grade students and programs reaching minority and female students.

This may be a good funding opportunity for BDPA Dallas chapter or National BDPA ... don't you think?

Grant Proposal: Texas Instruments Foundation (National BDPA)

BDPA Education and Technology Foundation (BETF) joined forces with National BDPA to submit a $10,000 grant proposal to the Texas Instruments Foundation.

We think that our Youth Technology Camp aligns well with the education initiatives currently being funding by TI Foundation.

Do you remember that Texas Instruments was named one of the Best Companies for Blacks in Technology back in 2005. Perhaps we can renew the relationship in 2010!

Please let us know if you have any inside contacts within Texas Instruments that might be helpful.
