Kayleah Bradley Uses Johnson & Johnson Scholarship at Middle Tennessee State University

Kayleah Bradley
Johnson and Johnson announced eight (8) winners of the scholarship offered to BDPA Students. One of the winners is Kayleah Bradley. Kayleah is a sophomore at Middle Tennessee State University where she is pursuing a degree in Professional Chemistry.

Kayleah was born in Springfield, Illinois but has lived in Brentwood, Tennessee for nine years. She enjoys running, baking and volunteering in her spare time. When she was two, she decided that she wanted to become a doctor. The main reason for that decision was her love of helping people and the smell of hospital soap. As she grew older, she realized her joy of helping children. So, she did some research and found that a doctor for children is called a pediatrician. As she found out more and more information about this career path, she decided that was her purpose. Therefore, after graduating from college she plans on attending medical school and becoming a pediatrician. In the future, she would also like to run a pediatrics practice.
"My most memorable moment in BDPA is receiving this scholarship. This scholarship allows me to continue my education to accomplish my dream," said Kayleah. "I am just learning about BDPA, therefore, I have not yet experienced any of the competitions. I plan on getting more involved in BDPA soon. I am positive that BDPA will be an extraordinary experience, and I will gain many skills and friends along the way."

Johnson & Johnson Scholar Turayo Tijani Follows Unexpected Path

Turayo Tijani will use the 2015 Johnson & Johnson Scholarship for BDPA Students to complete her studies of actuarial science at Morgan State University. We asked Turayo to share some insights on her story with us:

Turayo Tijani
My life thus far has taken many unexpected paths. I came to the United States in 2003 by pure chance. My grandmother was coming to visit her daughter, and she was illiterate in English so I was chosen to accompany her. My visitor’s visa expired in 2005, and I did not find out until the junior year of high school, around 2010. While in high school, I found a mentor in my soccer coach. She helped guide me in my future plans after graduating from high school.
I attended the closest post-secondary institution which was Prince George’s Community College, and the experience was a dream. I had the best professors a student could ask for; ones who did not teach from the text but used it only as a supplementary material. I was again lucky to meet another faculty member, the adviser to the multicultural Kaleidoscope club. She helped me find available scholarships for which I was eligible, and she provided a platform for me to speak to high school students about my experiences as an undocumented student in college. I graduated from Prince George’s Community College in 2014 and transferred to Morgan State University to study actuarial science, a major recommended by my high school soccer coach.

My full name is Motunrayo which in Yoruba means “I see joy again”. Despite the adversity of being an undocumented student, I have been able to find supportive people throughout my life. My high school mentor helped me pay for school by suggesting tutoring and hair braiding. I was already helping out my classmates with their advanced placement classes, so becoming a tutor was relatively easy. I also knew how to do hair, so the opportunity to earn money from it was welcomed. And when I received my work authorization, I was able to legally work at my community college as an experienced tutor.
Now at Morgan State University, my goal is to graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in actuarial science complemented with some IT technical skills. I plan to take my first actuarial exam in October, and to prepare for a SQL certification course by the end of the year.

My involvement with BDPA is through the Johnson & Johnson Scholarship. Being selected to receive this scholarship means a great deal to me. It is one less item on my list of concerns, and it means that I will be able to focus solely on classes and on learning the material than on the payment date of my tuition. Getting this scholarship provides that cushion of one less worry, and it also serves as encouragement to further my studies.

Johnson & Johnson was recently named the BDPA Epsilon Award winner as the 'Best Company for Blacks in Technology' at our recent national conference. The consistent effort in which they provide funding for this scholarship is a powerful reason why the company was recognized. Our hope is that others will see what we are doing ... and take steps on an individual or corporate level to help us do more!

He loves reaching out to his community and teaching kids how to play soccer. He teaches young people that they need to work hard on and off the field. Adrian is the captain of the soccer team at DePauw University.
Adrian wrote, "Being a student athlete has shown me the benefits of persevering through rough times along with bringing me into contact with a wide range of people. Furthermore, I am pursuing a major in computer science at my university as well. The IT area fascinates me and I love discussing new ideas or projects. I want to pursue a career in the administrative side of IT."
Adrian drove to Cincinnati earlier this summer to participate in the BDPA Midwest Regional IT Showcase. He plans to compete in the 13th annual BDPA IT Showcase in Washington DC later this month. His topic focuses on social media and how it can positively impact the workplace infrastructure, communication, and environment.

One major concept Adrian lives his life by is “The little things are the big things.” As a leader and a role model Adrian is willing to truly listen to those around them along with making decisions that affect a group as a whole. Adrian seeks to be the best man he can be, by helping as many people as he can.

Congratulations to Adrian for earning this $2,500 college scholarship from Johnson & Johnson!

BDPA New Jersey Hosts 10th Annual Families in Technology Day

The New Jersey chapter of the largest organization of African Americans in STEM industries, BDPA, is hosting its 10th Annual Families in Technology Day on June 8, 2013. This all-day event will encourage students and their parents to explore the tech arena, and learn the ins and outs from many of the industries’ finest teachers. Held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, the event will include workshops, instruction and an inspiring message from keynote speaker, Dr. Randal Pinkett.
Goldie Bonney
BDPA New Jersey president Goldie Bonney is excited about the 10-year mark of this event. “We’re proud to reach another milestone in technology for our organization. With the way STEM is constantly changing, it’s important for us to make sure the community, especially the students, are equipped and empowered with the tools to stay in demand,” explains Bonney. “Through the support of our sponsors JPMorgan Chase, Johnson & Johnson, and Prudential, we’re anticipating hundreds to attend this year.”
Students have been notoriously intimidated by curriculum associated with going into the technology industry, yet the career opportunities are rapidly growing, with demand at an all-time high for STEM educators and industry professionals.

Laptops will be raffled to students between grades four and twelve who register and submit the required one-paragraph personal statement of their potential personal benefits from receiving computers via the chapter’s Eventbrite site.

The keynote speaker, Pinkett, says he embraces the opportunity to inspire young people, and help them become less intimidated by coursework and opportunities in technology. As the co-founder, chairman and chief executive officer of BCT Partners, Pinkett knows about entrepreneurship and opportunity for growth in technology, and insists on giving back.

The venue is the New Jersey Institute of Technology, located at 323 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd Newark, N.J., 07103, and the event’s low-cost admission is five dollars.

Johnson-Johnson Renews Its Platinum Level Sponsorship of BDPA

National BDPA (NBDPA), the premier organization for African Americans in the Information Technology industry recently announced that Johnson & Johnson will once again be a sponsor of its 2012 BDPA Technology Conference & Career Fair.

A fully diverse event, the BDPA Technology Conference and Career Fair will bring together experts and innovators in technology from around North America for a unique conference experience. The four-day technology conference will be held at Baltimore’s Hilton from August 1-4, 2012. With nationally renowned speakers and the involvement of top-notch corporations, the conference will highlight what’s working best and what’s coming next at the intersection of technology, business leadership, professional development, youth education and community involvement.

The Career Fair takes place on August 3-4 and is open to the public.
"We are enthusiastic about our partnership with Johnson & Johnson," said Monique Berry, NBDPA’s President. "With over 38 chapters and 21,000 professionals online, NBDPA has been an advocate for fostering Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education, and Johnson & Johnson will be invaluable to our success as we bring technology executives, professionals and college students to one of the most anticipated STEM events in the technology industry."
LaVerne Council
BDPA has seen remarkable positive actions from Johnson & Johnson over the past five years or so. Last year the Johnson & Johnson chief information officer Laverne Council was a remarkable keynote speaker at the national awards gala. A number of chapters, especially BDPA New Jersey chapter, have been supported in a very aggressive manner by Johnson & Johnson. Even the BDPA Education and Technology Foundation (BETF) fondly recalls the matching grant challenge of $25,000 that J&J issued at the opening ceremony of a recent national conference. BETF leveraged that challenge to bring in almost $42,000 in donations to support our college scholarship fundraising.

I hope that other corporations in America step up to join Johnson & Johnson as a BDPA sponsor in 2012!

BDPA Names Five IT Heavyweights as Honorary Conference Chairs

LaVerne Council
There are some heavy-hitters in the information technology industry who plan to serve in a leadership capacity for the upcoming BDPA Technology Conference.  BDPA announced the following executives as Honorary Conference Chairs:
  1. LaVerne Council, Corporate Vice President and CIO, Johnson & Johnson
  2. Marc Di Francisco, President and CEO, Premier Event Management
  3. Brian Hedberg, Chief Information Officer, Health Care Service Corporation
  4.  Trudy McKnight, Executive Director, Small Business Partnership Programs, U.S. Public Sector, HP
  5. David Weick, Senior Vice President and Global Chief Information Officer, McDonald's
The Honorary Chair takes a leadership role in promoting the conference and provides resources to assist with the execution of a successful conference.
"BDPA is excited to recognize this year's honorary chairs for the 2011 National Conference”, said National BDPA President, Yvette Graham.
The conference theme, 'Ignite, Inspire and Empower: The GPS of Future Technologists', is both timely and appropriate given the state of our economy and the number of individuals who are still seeking employment. BDPA remains committed to excellence as it continues to serve as a catalyst for professional growth and technical development.

The 2011 National BDPA Technology Conference to be held in Chicago, IL on August 3-6, at the Hilton Chicago Hotel, provides a total information technology experience for high school and college students, information technology professionals, entrepreneurs, IT senior managers, corporations, academia, government agencies and the research community.

The Honorary Chairs accepted their roles, in part, because of the value-packed slate of offerings given by field experts. These seminars, plenary sessions and workshops exemplify BDPA's commitment to provide state of the art training, professional growth and technical development, entrepreneurial opportunity, technical resource offerings, and access to leading edge technology to its members, corporate supporters, and the community.

This blog plans to be in Chicago for the entire conference. How about you?
