BDPA Greater Columbia High School Computer Competition Team (2013)

BDPA Greater Columbia chapter is one of the most remarkable local BDPA chapters in the nation. They have shown a commitment to providing meaningful STEM learning experiences for K-12 students in South Carolina. The training is conducted under the umbrella of the Student Information Technology Education & Scholarship (SITES) program. Chapter leaders and volunteers are offering seminars and workshops in web development (asp.net), programming (vb.net) databases (mysql), java script, system development life-cycle, web site story boarding and argile project management methodology. The students in the chapter's SITES program are also taken through a series of workshops in video creation and editing, creating web page profile, and oral presentations.

The funding for training these young people comes from corporate sponsors (BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina and IT-oLogy), membership dues and supportive donors like yourself!

Grant Disbursement: BDPA Greater Columbia ($3,425)

BDPA Education and Technology Foundation (BETF) is pleased to announced that it has approved a $3,495 grant disbursement to the BDPA Greater Columbia chapter. BDPA Greater Columbia chapter president Mildred Allen indicates that the funds will be used to support "the 27 students in the High School Computer Training Program in 2012. Nine of these students will participate in the High School Computer Competition and Youth Technology Camp during the annual BDPA Technology Conference next month in Baltimore."

It's never too early to plan for the future. Please help us raise enough money to support college scholarships for the 2013 HSCC team trained by BDPA Greater Columbia.

Grant Award: Walmart Foundation ($4,000)

BDPA Greater Columbia chapter president Mildred Allen took the initiative to meet with local Wal-Mart Store community outreach leaders earlier this year. As a result of her efforts the BDPA Education and Technology Foundation (BETF) submitted $2,000 grant proposals to the local management at four different Wal-Mart stores in the Columbia, South Carolina area.

We are very pleased to report that two of those grant proposals were favorably received by the management at Store #1164 and Store #1286. This means that $4,000 in funding is coming to us in support of the Student Information Technology Education & Scholarship (SITES) program in South Carolina.  We received a message about our successful grant application from both stores. Here is one of the approval messages received earlier this week:

Message from Greater Columbia Chapter President

Greetings!

As we start the New Year, I want to take a moment to thank all of you for your support - moral, volunteer and financial - these past two years as I served as President of the BDPA Greater Columbia chapter.

We faced some challenges but with your help, we worked through them and kept progressing:

• We had no corporate sponsorships in 2010 but, through revitalizing our Corporate Advisory Council (CAC), and working with our corporate advisors, we were able to regain corporate sponsorship from BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina.
• We established new relationships within the community which netted additional financial support for the High School Computer Training Program and High School Computer Competition Program (HSTCP/HSCC)
• In 2011, we were faced with finding a new home for our HSTCP/HSCC program and were fortunate to receive a generous offer to use the classroom space at the downtown offices of IT-oLogy.
• We hosted the 2011 Regional High School Computer Competition (at IT-oLogy) with six teams from four BDPA chapters in attendance (Atlanta, Charlotte Greater Columbia and Triangle).
• We worked with the BDPA Education and Technology Foundation on various grant proposals, garnering a portion of the American Honda Foundation grant which helped us make the trip to the 2011 National BDPA Technology Conference in Chicago.

• And finally, we took one of the largest groups of students of any of the chapters to the 2011 National BDPA youth technology camp (16 middle and high school students), demonstrating that South Carolina has a lot of intellectual talent waiting to become the next generation to enter the IT field.

Take Five: Jamesetta James (BDPA Greater Columbia)

Jamesetta James has worked the past few years as the national coordinator of the BDPA Youth Technology Camp (YTC).  Earlier this year she provided her review of the 2011 YTC experience in Chicago. She has had a positive impact on hundreds of young people over the years and we thought it would be good to hear from Jamesetta as part of our Take Five interview series:

1. How did you get involved with BDPA? - My first involvement with BDPA was assisting Mildred Allen in coordinating the YTC presenters and workshops for the 2010 conference in Philadelphia.
2. What is the most rewarding aspect of working with BDPA? - The most rewarding aspect of working with BDPA is seeing immediate results with the workshops that the students are involved in whether it be soft skills or developing new IT skills. The students are immediately equipped with knowledge that can be applied to their currents studies.
3. Can you share a 'success story' about any of your past HSCC students? - Although this is my first year working with the high school computer competition (HSCC) students from the Greater Columbia Chapter, the success I witnessed was how the veteran HSCC students embraced the new members of the team. Great leadership skills were displayed and one great lesson observed was that team work was always the focal point in their preparation for the 2011 HSCC competition.
4. What would future evolution or change would you like to see in BDPA's STEM-based training? - STEM based programs are very isolated in how it operates for each BDPA chapter. Unfortunately, this problem exists for school districts as well. The change I would like to see is the way that the training is implemented. The STEM base training curriculum should be transparent in such that is the format used by all chapters. The universal repository of technology resources created by Zack Garbow is truly is an excellent starting point. To ensure that BDPA students are receiving the STEM training parallel to the school district STEM curriculum I think that partnerships should be formed between the school district or districts and the BDPA chapter.
5. Any advice for people considering a donation to BETF? - One advise for individuals, company's or corporation that are considering a donation to BETF is to visit one BDPA training class. They will witness immediate return on their investment. Seeing the skills that students, from all grade levels, gain through the training provided by the chapters will demonstrate why our donors should continue their support in BDPA's efforts.

BDPA Students Demonstrate STEM Skills at BDPA Southeast Regional High School Computer Competition

The BDPA Southeastern Regional High School Computer Competition (HSCC) was held on Saturday, June 18th, at IT-oLogy, a local sponsor of the event. BDPA Greater Columbia chapter hosted the event with participants arriving in South Carolina from as far away as Atlanta, Charlotte and Raleigh/Durham. The regional HSCC championship is a warm-up for the national HSCC championship held August 3-6, 2011 at the National BDPA Technology Conference in Chicago.

BDPA is an internationally recognized organization of IT professionals whose goals include preparing young people who are interested in becoming the next generation of 'Information Technology Thought Leaders' in academia and Corporate America. The regional and national HSCC championships are part of the BDPA science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) pipeline summarized in its motto, 'From the Classroom to the Boardroom'.

Each year BDPA chapters across the country offer website and database design classes to middle and high-school students. In addition to technical subjects, students are also exposed to soft skills training, current technology topics and speakers from various professions.

At the national level, BDPA hosts a computer competition at its annual conference and each chapter is invited to bring a five-member team to compete. Winners at the national level are rewarded with scholarships and sponsor-donated items, up to and including laptop computers.

For students who are not on competition teams, the National BDPA Technology Conference holds a Youth Technology Camp where students attend seminars and hands-on workshops on technology, entrepreneurship and soft skills topics offered by leaders in their fields. The X-Box competition workshops are always a favorite.

This year’s BDPA Southeast Regional HSCC featured 38 students, representing 19 middle and high schools from Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina plus over 30 instructors, chaperones, parents and spectators. The competition consisted of a written test, oral team round-robin test and a web/database design problem – all timed.

Message from Greater Columbia Chapter President

Columbia, SC

The BDPA Greater Columbia High School Computer Training Program (HSCTP) will start up on Saturday, March 12, 2011 and run through Saturday, July 23, 2011. The first class has an orientation hour starting at 8:30am. All students and at least one parent are requested to attend. Class will then start at approximately 9:30am and go to 1:30pm.

There are some changes this year:

1. We have a new location! Classes will now meet at IT-ology, the new facility for the Consortium for Enterprise System Management (CESM). CESM sponsored our chapter's travel to the national BDPA high school computer competition (HSCC) championships held last year in Philadelphia.

The facility is located at 1301 Gervais Street - Suite 200 (Near the corner of Marion and Gervais Streets), Columbia, SC. There is parking in the garage next door to the building (you can enter the garage from Gervais Street). I think you will like the new digs.

2. The class is a little longer - 9:30am - 1:30pm (includes time for lunch). We have a couple of new instructors plus we have a more structured curriculum.

3. The Regional High School Computer Competition (HSCC) will be hosted by BDPA Greater Columbia on Saturday, June 25, 2011. The national competition will be in Chicago, IL at the National BDPA Technology Conference and Career Expo on August 3-6, 2011.

4. Students and parents will be required to sign a program commitment agreement. Details will be provided at the orientation on March 12th.

Consortium for Enterprise Systems Management Scholarship for BDPA Students (Deadline Extended: 12/31/2010)

Consortium for Enterprise Systems Management (CESM) executive director Lonnie Emard is enthusiastic about his work. CESM is a collaboration of companies, colleges and universities, and community groups that share a mission: Increase the supply in the IT talent pipeline. As such, Mr. Emard thought it would be a great idea to offer a scholarship for any qualified high school student in BDPA-nation.

Applicants must excel academically, show exceptional leadership potential, and make an impact on their communities through service to others. Applicants need to (a) be from South Carolina or North Carolina or (b) attend a college in either of these two states.

Consortium/BDPA Scholars will be awarded a one-time $2,000 scholarship that may be used to pursue an information technology focused degree at an accredited four-year college or university of their choice located in South Carolina or North Carolina. The Consortium/BDPA scholarship may be used to supplement benefits from the college or university a student plans to attend and fellowships from other foundations or organizations. Students may use the scholarship to cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, room and board, and other college-related expenses.

Scholarship winners will be selected based on the application, essay, and letters of recommendation.

The deadline has been extended to December 31, 2010 and we want to see great activity from our students ... especially those in our BDPA chapters located in Charlotte, Greater Columbia or Triangle.

BDPA Greater Columbia High School Computer Competition Team (2010)

I was walking in the lobby of the conference hotel last night and came across the national high school computer competition (HSCC) team representing BDPA Greater Columbia. The five students (and one alternate) were working with their coaches on last-minute study for the 2010 national HSCC championships that are take place July 29-30 in Philadelphia.

The five young people on the Greater Columbia national team are: Tavares Anderson, Jaid Gilbert, Nyasha Gooden, Sami Patel and Gregg Taylor. They are very enthusiastic and I hope that they do well in the national championships this year!
