Reflections on 2012 BDPA Technology Conference

National BDPA president Monique Berry adjourned the 34th annual BDPA Technology Conference last night. It was a truly remarkable 4-day gathering of information technology thought leaders from all over the nation. Here are some comments for those who were there in person.
  1. Monique Berry (National BDPA president) -
"Congratulations to all of our winners as well as every child that participated in the Youth Technology Camp and the High School Computer Competition. I'm very proud of each and every one of you."
  2. Goldie Bonney (BDPA New Jersey chapter president) -
"Had a GREAT time with my BDPA family at the conference. Shout out to all other chapter presidents who continue to do big things in their respective chapters. Congratulations to Renetta English on her Chapter of the Year win again for NY! See you all next year in DC!"
  3. Perry Carter (BDPA Washington DC chapter president) -
Congratulations BDPA Atlanta (2012 HSCC World Champions) and BDPA New York (2012 Chapter of the Year) for this year's accomplishments and for upholding the highest standards in community involvement and philanthropy in direct support of America's STEM initiatives! We hope to see greater achievements in Washington DC next year.
  4. Dr. Curtis Charles (Fayetteville State University senior associate vice chancellor) -
"I will like to express my sincere thanks to Perry Carter and the BDPA Leadership for allowing me the opportunity to participate in the BDPA HBCU STEM panel. Fayetteville State University and the Center for Defense and Homeland Security look forward to a long and lasting relationship with all BDPA Chapters. Please feel free to call upon me at anytime."
  5. Yvette Graham (National BDPA past president) -
"Just arrived back home in Chicago (Oak Park) from Baltimore Maryland where I attended one of the best conferences for NBDPA. Congrats to all winners (Sponsors, Members, and Students). A special shout out to the HSCC Team from the BDPA Atlanta Chapter for being the first team ever to receive a perfect score!!! Thanks to the NBDPA Leadership Team and the National Conference Team for a JOB WELL DONE!!!"
  6. Wayne Hicks (BETF executive director) -
"I just had a great time introducing over 100 young people who are the future face of technology at the Opening Ceremony of the 34th BDPA Technology Conference in Baltimore, MD. I can't begin to tell you how remarkable it was to see these bright young faces as they were being recognized by BDPA sponsors, leaders, volunteers and members. BDPA is such a truly remarkable organization. Another highlight of the event was the fact that we raised over $6,000 in about 10 minutes to increase the amount of college scholarships that we will give out to high-performing HSCC students. BDPA is truly 'Making Moves' and I'm grateful to be part of it."
  7. Cedrick Moore (National BDPA career development director) -
"I just returned from the 2012 BDPA Technology Conference in Baltimore, MD. I just want to let you know that the jobs recovery is REAL. Not since the early 2000's have I seen employers so anxious in seeking jobs candidates. Here are a few that truly demonstrated to me they are ready to hire today: GE, JP Morgan Chase, State Farm, Microsoft, MillerCoors, Johnson & Johnson, WellPoint, Wells Fargo, etc. Not minor players here.

The funny thing is, I was consistently being told that YOU (minority I.T. professionals) DO NOT EXIST or in other words, you are hard to find and hire. They were certainly looking for YOU so....

    What do you think? Comments?"
  8. Sharrarne Morton (Morton Media president) -
"Just witnessed a room full of remarkable young scientists, engineers, mathematicians and technologists win thousands of dollars in scholarships at the BDPA National Conference in Baltimore, Md. Where were the TV cameras? There are brilliant young people doing spectacular things to ensure a brighter future for all of us. Congratulations to them all! We will see you at next year's conference in DC!!"
  9. Stacy Stewart (BDPA Dallas chapter president) -
"Hello BDPA family, I'm currently in the air returning from the 34th annual National BDPA Technology Conference that was held in Baltimore and I must say this was an exhilarating experience, from the opening ceremony to the formal gala held on the last day of the conference. The professional sessions, dignitaries reception and networking with other BDPA members across the nation was exceptional. Teams from seventeen chapters competed in the High School Computer Competition in which the Atlanta chapter won thousands of dollars in scholarship monies and received high-end HP laptop computers. The Youth Technology Camp produced and edited videos this year with one of our Dallas students on a winning team.

Next year our National BDPA Conference will be held in Washington DC on August 14-17. I encourage all of our members to attend! If you have not experienced a National BDPA Conference you don't want to miss this one ... if you have experienced a National BDPA Conference before, then I know you will be there."

Where Are They Now? BDPA Chicago Chapter Presidents

BDPA Chicago became the 14th chapter in the nation when it began on March 15, 1986. The chapter had eight founding members (Marvin Walker, President; Hazel Beason, Vice President; Anthony Pittman, Treasurer; Michelle Walker, Recording Secretary; Wallace Neal, Education Chairperson; Roy Peeples, Public Relations Chairperson; Greg Walker, Finance Chairperson; and Fidelis Umeh, Member)

The chapter has a potent legacy in BDPA history that includes 'BDPA Chapter of the Year' honors in 1991-1993, 2000 and 2005. I used BDPA Chicago chapter as my role model when I served as BDPA Cincinnati chapter president in 1999-2001. It amazes me that BDPA Chicago maintained its spot as the chapter with the largest membership for over a decade. The ability of this chapter to recruit and retain members over the years is simply remarkable.

The chapter hosted national BDPA technology conferences in 1988 ('Growth and Success by Design')and 2001 ('Empowering the Nation Through Information').

BDPA Chicago students won national high school computer competition (HSCC) two times (1994 and 2006). The students from these three championship years are: Joseph Huggins (2006), Nickesha King (1994), Demmie Quinones (1994), Lee Reed (2006), Andreaus Robinson (2006), Joey Rojas (2004), Maurice Shelton (2006) and Walter Webster (2004).
I hope that these HSCC alumni are still connected to BDPA. We want HSCC testimonials from each of these young people if they can be located.

Five of the past BDPA Chicago chapter presidents (Ollie Morgan, Milt Haynes, Ricky Penick, Reggie Gardner and Yvette Graham) also served as members of the National BDPA Executive Committee. It would be great if we could hear from each of the past BDPA Chicago chapter presidents:

Where are they now?

Geeks Gone Great Chats With National BDPA President Yvette Graham

Cross-posted from Blacks Gone Geek

Yvette Graham has grown up in BDPA and is currently enjoying the crest of her term as national president of the premiere organization for African Americans in Information Technology.

A BDPA leader since the early 80’s, Yvette Graham has made an indelible impression throughout the organization since her early years of service with the Chicago chapter, up through recent years, to emerge as spokesperson and chief executive officer representing over 40+ chapters across the  United States.

I had the opportunity to chat with Ms. Graham, just after the August 2011 BDPA Technology Conference in Chicago.  She shares her perspective on attaining success with BDPA as well as key values she ascribes to.  It was a very special space shared...

BGG: Madame President, what would you like to share regarding how your experiences as a young person helped to shape the woman and leader you are today?

YG: Well I’ve been fortunate every step of my journey to have the help of special people who are close to me. Right out of school I was fortunate enough to land a position with Allstate, which would prove to be a career defining move.  It was actually at Allstate where I received my first exposure to BDPA.  I found out about the corporate chapter there, and was asked to be a guest speaker to present on “DB2 Relational Databases”.  I had no idea then that I would dare to achieve the many successes I’ve enjoyed with BDPA.  BDPA helped me to be a stronger professional and leader at Allstate. But I must also credit my strong church background as an early influence that shaped who I am.  And I would be remiss if I did not speak of the support that I have received from my husband. For 25 years, he has supported me throughout my journey of who I am today. So you see I’ve had strong support systems along the way that have helped me to learn and grow.

BGG:  A strong support system is everything...and you have given us an idea of how you were able to embrace your success.  Who would you say has been your greatest inspiration from a mentor perspective?

YG: In terms of a mentor role, as far as corporate America goes, I have to say there is a gentleman from my church who provided many years of guidance and mentoring.  In fact I admire this person so, because he is one of the first African American officers at Comm Ed.  He worked very hard to come up through the ranks to become an executive. He is the type of person who believes in giving back and therefore helped to mentor me professionally.  He has given me a great deal of advice, for example something so simple like learning from the good habits of people. I have learned how to observe others as well.  To this day I can refer to the “toolkit” created in my mind that holds those handy tips that I can use when I need to.

I also can thank my personal mentor, my mother, who really instilled in me the value of being a lady.  No matter the situation, she instructed me to always be a lady – from dressing like a lady, to behavior. It’s been something that I’ve carried out, and it works for me.  I don’t try to be someone other than who I am in any circle I travel in.  Although I interact with a largely male population, I conduct myself in a manner that people can respect.

BGG: For anyone who does not know, let’s talk about the many roles you’ve held with BDPA over the years.  Tell us about your evolution and also the work that launched you to another level?

YG:  I had chaired the Allstate Corporate Chapter, which I have to say was a wonderful introduction to the senior officers at my company.  My management was committed to invest in my development and has been extremely supportive through the years.

The number 1 thing I was so passionate to accomplish was the work to help our young people. In fact, BDPA created a position just for me, which was centered on college students.  This presented my first really big introduction to corporate America, having to create a national internship process.  All of these resumes started rolling in, from all over the United States, mind you, and I had to articulate to corporate CIOs and the like, the value of our program and help to place these students.  I stayed actively involved with all stakeholders to create a strong model for this program.  Eventually National BDPA asked to take over the program which was the SIP (Student Internship Program).

The work I was able to accomplish there, paved the way for my leadership role with BDPA Chicago. I continued to learn and develop, with the support and backing of my company to evolve into a stronger leader, both where BDPA was concerned and also as a director at Allstate.  As president of Chicago chapter, I started attending national board meetings and began to identify where I could help and a new level within the National organization, and the rest as they say is history.

BGG:  As a wife, mother of a college senior, church leader, and leader in corporate America, you are responsible for so much, on top of being president of a national organization, which requires a rigorous travel schedule, countless appearances, chairing untold board meetings, etc. What advice would you impart for such success for others with high ambition?

YG:  I learned very early to balance, but I also have the help of many great people who do wonderful work. Who you have on your team is very important for your success. I would say building relationships is so important, I can’t say enough about the value of good relationships I continue learning many things from observation. And whenever I am faced with major decisions, I don’t make a move without weighing all the circumstances and without prayer.

Towards the end of my presidency with National BDPA, I can say that I’ve grown mentally and spiritually. My time in office was met with many challenges and opportunities that have stretched me. I’ve learned so much and I’m not even the same person I used to be.  And it’s funny, but I really never thought that I would be national president; I had no ambitions towards being national president of BDPA.

BGG:  Really??!  It seems with the various roles you’ve held at the local Chicago level, and then moving on to hold offices at the national level, that it would be a logical transition to position to run for higher office?

YG: No, never did I think of it.  I’ll tell you.  I had worked with so many people along the way - I knew so many people across the organization (nationally) that 6 different chapters nominated me for national president, including Chicago.  I looked at the situation from the point of the opportunity was presenting itself to me.  But before I made one move, I weighed it.  I had conversations with my husband, I discussed with my Chicago Chapter leaders, and I discussed with my Allstate organization.  I had the backing and support of all three.  If I had not had the encouragement of any one of them, I would not have run!

BGG:  Every president has a legacy. BDPA has existed since 1975, now for the first time, starting in 2012 the regionalization of chapters, will be attributed to your administration, correct?  What challenges were overcome to deliver this major organizational change effort?

YG: This is correct, although the research and initial analysis on moving the organization to a regional model took place under the prior administration (which I was a part of), it was this administration that moved it forward by including it within our 2010-2011 Strategy where a team was pulled together to: 1) design the bylaws to support regionalization; 2) define the breakout of chapters aligned to the four regions; and 3) finalize the stage of electing the Regional Vice Presidents and Regional Directors during this past delegates meeting held in Chicago.

As far as challenges, I would have to say it centered on communication. Change is very difficult for everyone, but to overcome that change we had to ensure that we were communicating the right message to the right people at the right time. As a leadership team, we had to be sure that we provided a message for the local chapter presidents, for the local chapter “incoming presidents”, as well as being available to discuss this with all members of the organization.

Finally, because this new model was starting under our incoming president, Monique Berry, we decided that she should be the voice of this change since it will be led by her. This gave BDPA the opportunity to begin hearing from Monique, instead of me. I believe all of this helped with the implementation of regionalization.

BGG: What are the greatest advantages to regionalization and what are the important next steps members can look forward to?

YG: The greatest advantage of regionalization is that more focus can be placed on the needs of chapters. Under the current structure of BDPA, it is expected that the National Executive Committee would be able to design programs that would support our 40+ chapters. This was a great model in the 70s and 80s, because we were a growing organization without as many chapters. Now that we have grown, to better serve our chapters, we needed to put leaders in place that support the needs of the chapters within a region (for example the programs needed on the east coast could be completely different that the programs needed for the Midwest).

BGG: So, what’s next for Yvette Graham?

YG:  I really don’t know!!  There’s a lot of talk and speculation around my next move, to be honest, I really haven’t fully processed that yet. I’ve had a very full term as national president with so much activity going on, and I even served as Chair of my church’s 90th Anniversary Program last year, in addition to everything else going on in my life!  There wasn’t any time to think about what will come next for me.  I do know that at some point I would like to hold a corporate board seat, but as for right now, I’m just enjoying my time!   I will just say I’m having fun considering the possibilities!

2011 BDPA Technology Conference: Day #1

National BDPA president Yvette Graham banged the gavel down at the end of last night's Opening Ceremonies to declare that the 33rd annual BDPA Technology Conference was officially open. The first day of this national conference was an unqualified success.

There are a growing number of people tweeting about it (search #BDPA). There are a growing number of people checking in on Foursquare ... with BDPA Twin Cities member Justin Wulf currently in power as the Foursquare 'Mayor' of the BDPA Conference!   Facebook mentions of BDPA seem to grow each hour of the day.  I suspect that more and more photos will start to show up on Flickr and more and more videos will appear on YouTube.

There are some remarkable high school and college students at the conference to participate in the Youth Technology Camp, High School Computer Competition and IT Showcase. These are the young people that America is counting on to 'win the future'. We need more recognition, support (financial and volunteers), and love to be shared with these young people. We need Corporate America to reach out to these young IT superstars in the same way that the NBA, NFL and MLB reach out to their young IT superstars. I encourage anyone reading this blog post to use the POST REPLY feature down below to share a comment on a BDPA student that you've met this week at the conference!

The opening ceremony speaker was McDonald's president and chief operating officer Don Thompson. The brother's message was outstanding. Yeah ... the second-in-command for one of the largest companies in the world is a Blackman! He spoke to the students and adult IT professionals in the room with a powerful message on taking control of our own careers by doing the right things with quickness. I wonder if anyone videotaped his speech? If so, I would love to see it.

There were over a dozen workshops on the first day of the conference. I attended the IT Showcase presentation hosted by Dr. Jesse Bemley. Good turnout and outstanding dialogue with each and every member of the workshop audience. I also attended Beyond Blogging workshop hosted by Michael Jenkins-Brown (Raytheon). His focus was on WordPress platform. He convinced me that I need to begin migrating my websites to the WordPress platform. I plan to do so before the end of the month.

There were three chapter awards announced on the first day of the conference. Congratulations to the following chapters:
  1. Chicago - Most Outstanding Community Service Award
  2. New York - Most Outstanding Chapter Management Award
  3. Philadelphia - Most Outstanding Membership Award
This is a 4-day conference. I wonder what will be in store for me for the next 3 days?

Message from National BDPA President

NOTE: This message was recently shared by our national president to corporate champions around the nation.

BDPA represents people that span “From the Classroom to the Boardroom”. The National BDPA Board of Directors consists of a team of people who represent our industry and are committed to “Taking this Organization to the Next Level”.

We are living in a time where the unemployment rate is extremely high. For that reason, this leadership team is focused on enhancing our value proposition to attract, retain, reclaim, excite and inform members by providing them with relevant programs and services to help strengthen their personal brand and enhance both their technology and leadership skills. This will position our members to be part of a strong pipeline with a wealth of knowledge to be a great asset for your company.

Our strategic direction for 2010-2011 is to transform while we are performing. We have three major pillars that we have aligned to that will allow us to take BDPA to the next level:
  1. Operational Transformation
  2. Regional Transformation and
  3. Technological Transformation.
I invite you to read our portfolio and become a supporter of a great organization that believes in its members and provides support to our industry.

Message from National BDPA President

As a global member focused technology organization, our mission is to deliver programs and services for the professional well-being of our stakeholders. Founded in 1975, our founders Earl Pace Jr. and the late David Wimberly had a vision to build an organization that would be a powerful advocate for its stakeholders’ interests within the global technology industry. Our stakeholders consist of students, adults, entrepreneurs, educational institutions, and corporate sponsors.

For over 35 years, From the Classroom to the Board Room has become our motto. In 2011, we will continue to implement programs that will ensure our members are well positioned as leaders and highly skilled IT and entrepreneurs for our sponsors and the community. We’ve accomplished a lot in 2010 and in 2011; the best is yet to come. Our focus will continue to be on "Taking Our Membership To The Next Level” as we transform our organization while delivering quality programs.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr said, "The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” BDPA, this quote represents us more than you will ever know. We have accomplished great things in 2010 and I am looking forward to working with each of you in 2011 as we Take BDPA To The Next Level.

Our First Quarter Board Meeting will be held in the Windy City. I am looking forward to meeting our incoming and returning board members during this time.

Best wishes to you and your families for a wonderful New Year!

2010 BDPA Technology Conference Honorary Co-Chairs

National BDPA announced Marc Di Francisco (president and CEO, Premier Event Management), Michael Heim (CIO, Eli Lilly and Company) and Garth Marcial (vice president of DePuy and Ortho Clinical Diagnostics) as Honorary Chairs for the 2010 National BDPA Technology Conference. These honorary chairs take a leadership role in promoting the conference and provide resources to assist with the execution of a successful conference.

“BDPA is excited to recognize this year’s honorary chairs for the 2010 National Conference”, said National BDPA President, Yvette Graham. The theme, "Access for All", is both timely and appropriate given President Obama's challenge to all Americans: "We need to invest in the skill and education of our people." BDPA is a catalyst for professional growth and technical development.

All three conference co-chairs shared their insights on BDPA and the upcoming national conference:

"Through the CIO Forum’s regional conferences, we work to bring together the local BDPA chapters and CIO’s from the area to network socially and professionally," said honorary co-chair Marc Di Francisco. "We strive to enhance membership for the BDPA by promoting it and we also allow BDPA members to attend our Forums complimentary."

"Lilly's corporate vision is to improve health outcomes for individual patients. As patient populations across disease states are very diverse, a focus on diversity is simply good business”, said conference co-chair Michael Heim. "Our partnership with BDPA has been very beneficial for employee growth and development through opportunities provided at both local and national levels. The professional workshops, leadership development, and access to community outreach activities all expand our employee's breadth. Importantly, BDPA provides direct exposure to African Americans in technology leadership roles across industry -- this type of role modeling and mentoring is invaluable."
"The annual BDPA Conference serves as an integral opportunity for Johnson & Johnson to recruit high-potential candidates into our family of companies," said conference co-chair Garth Marcial. "The conference networking events allow us to network and collaborate with sponsor companies across the nation to continue to improve the bright and vibrant future of the BDPA organization. Johnson & Johnson partners with local BDPA chapters throughout the year, hosting various events, forums, and information sessions to demonstrate our dedication to the advancement of BDPA and its members."
The 32nd annual National BDPA Technology Conference to be held in Philadelphia, PA on July 28-31, at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown Hotel, provides a total information technology experience for high school and college students, information technology professionals, entrepreneurs, IT senior managers, corporations, academia, government agencies and the research community. The value-packed slate of offerings given by field experts exemplifies the BDPA commitment to provide state of the art training, professional growth and technical development, entrepreneurial opportunity, technical resource offerings, and access to leading edge technology to its members, corporate supporters, and the community.

2006 National BDPA High School Computer Competition (HSCC) Rankings

The National BDPA HSCC championships were held in Los Angeles CA in 2006. The west coast venue proved to be too costly for some teams to attend. As a result, the level of participation dipped down to 19 teams. Nevertheless, the battle for supremacy amongst the high school students was intense.

The HSCC team trained by BDPA Southern Minnesota tried valiantly to defend the national championship won the year before. However, this was the year for the HSCC team trained by BDPA Chicago chapter to finally break through for the gold medal. It was a remarkable effort by four truly remarkable young people (Joseph Huggins, Lee Reed, Andreaus Robinson and Maurice Shelton), their coach (Gibran Adejele) and chapter president (Yvette Graham).

Here are the rankings for all 19 teams that competed in 2006 national HSCC championships with the scholarship winnings for each student in parenthesis:
  1. Chicago ($2500 Bemley Scholarship)
  2. Southern Minnesota ($1500 Bemley Scholarship)
  3. Washington DC ($500 Bemley Scholarship)
  4. Chattanooga
  5. Central Illinois
  6. Richmond
  7. Austin
  8. Hartford
  9. Cincinnati
  10. Los Angeles
  11. Charlotte
  12. Philadelphia
  13. Detroit
  14. Twin Cities

This was the only year since 2002 where we didn't have HSCC teams trained by Cleveland or New Jersey chapters in the competition.

Our foundation seeks to increase the number of students that receive Bemley Scholarships in 2009 and beyond. To do so, we need your help. Please consider making an online donation to help us interest young people in science and technology.

Anyhow, were any of you at the 2006 National BDPA Technology Conference held in Los Angeles, CA? Do you remember the HSCC championships? Do you remember any of the workshops or speakers from that year's conference?

Message from National President

Yvette Graham begins her term as National BDPA President this month. She wasted no time in sharing her thoughts with members and other BDPA stakeholders around the world.

As we enter into 2010 with a new administration and a strong vision, I am so excited about the many opportunities that we have in store for BDPA! During my term as president-elect, I closely observed our organization’s current state and listened to you, the many voices of BDPA.

I heard your passion about what makes BDPA wonderful, as well as feedback on how BDPA can be so much better. Over the coming months, you will hear from me on a timely basis about the objectives and programs my administration is tasked to deliver. Simply put, Taking Membership to the Next Level, is what we are about as we re-establish and re-engineer our BDPA priorities.

We have a strong legacy of achievement established by our BDPA Founders, Earl Pace Jr. and the Late David Wimberly, and our best appreciation of their life’s work is our collective dedication to ensure that BDPA continues to evolve in strength and in unity to reach higher heights.

Our call to action is evident with today’s economic and job market realities. We must ensure BDPA is well positioned as THE “go-to” diversity supplier of highly skilled IT and entrepreneur talent. We are clear in the understanding that in order for BDPA to remain viable in today’s global society we must continuously seek to operate more efficiently, and provide our stakeholders with a clear return on investment as we set out to reach our goals.

Standing with me to accomplish our overall mission is a team of dedicated and equally engaged leaders. I am pleased to introduce our elected and appointed officers who are joining me in taking our organization to the next level. Please see officers listed [on our website] and take a moment to click on the links to read their awesome bios.

We’re off to a great start to the year with our First Quarter Board Meeting in Philadelphia, where I look forward to meeting all of our chapter presidents and leaders across the nation to hear the input and experiences that will enhance the fabric of BDPA. All of our 2010 Quarterly Board Meetings have been scheduled with dates and locations to be published this month. Also, we have an outstanding national conference planned for 2010, and we will provide you with timely details and communications to ensure our success. I know we will set the pace early for accomplishing our target goals, and I thank everyone in advance for being up for the task!

Dr. Maya Angelou said, “Nothing will work, unless you do”, and I invite everyone across BDPA to join me as an ambassador committed to take our wonderful organization to the next level!

Best wishes to you and your families for a wonderful New Year!

Yvette Graham, president
National BDPA

National BDPA Elects New Officers -- Congratulations to Monique Berry and Charles Moore

National BDPA held elections last week during the 31st annual BDPA Technology Conference in Raleigh NC. Monique Berry (Philadelphia) won a unanimous vote to serve as our National BDPA President-Elect (2010-2011). She will subsequently serve as national president in 2012-2013. Monique has been chapter president-elect (2006-2007) and chapter president (2008-2009) in Philadelphia over the past four year. It is worth noting that the chapter has won the highest accolades given out to a chapter -- Chapter of the Year -- in each of the past three years.

Monique added to her legacy by being named the 2009 BDPA Chapter President of the Year.

Monique goes into the national leadership arena with a great deal of momentum. It is my hope that she and the incoming national president, Yvette Graham (Chicago) will form a mighty union that will take BDPA to greater levels of measurable success in 2010 and beyond. We can no longer afford to stagnate ... as we've done over the past few years.

The delegates also voted in a new Vice President-Finance (VPF) last week in Raleigh NC. Charles Moore (Charlotte) won a tightly-contested election over current national VPF Monica Bowe (Cleveland). I am not as comfortable or confident that the delegates made the right decision. I tend to think that the majority of the delegates voted with their hearts and not their heads on this one. Charles is a great guy ... but, I think that he is wrong-headed about a number of his election objectives (e.g., "Obtain BDPA’s 501(c)3 tax status").

I hope that Mr. Moore proves me wrong. I hope that he becomes a strong and disciplined financial leader that inspires the trust and fealty of all BDPA members. Further, I hope that he figures out a way to keep Monica Bowe on his team in 2010-2011. That would be a great sign of leadership on his part.

Personally, I will miss serving on the National BDPA Board of Directors with Yvette, Monique and Charles. I understand that the delegates decided to remove the BETF Executive Director from the National BDPA Board of Directors. I think that it was a short-sighted move. However, it is consistent with the short-sighted direction of our current national leader.

Time will tell if BDPA can re-focus on the big picture when it comes to programs, services, membership and finance. I have the utmost in confidence in incoming national leadership team (Yvette and Monique). I hope that BDPA can survive the new few months until the new team is officially in place on January 1, 2010.

In the meantime, I will continue to focus on building a strong national foundation that can provide additional financial resources in support of BDPA's local and national education & technology programs in 2010 and beyond. I know that Yvette and Monique beleive in the BDPA Foundation. I hope that Charles will take time to figure it out before he takes office.

I no longer hold out hope for the current national leader. She could never see the vision for BETF as evidenced by her unwillingness to work in synergy with us over the past 20 months.

Anyhow, I hope that all BETF-blog readers join me in wishing the best of luck to Yvette and Monique as they begin transition planning for 2010. It should be a remarkable year of hope and change for all of us that love BDPA. What say u?

BDPA Conference: Nat'l Board of Directors Meeting

Day 1 - National BDPA Board of Directors (NBOD) meeting held all day. NBOD membership includes 50 chapter presidents and a dozen elected or appointed officers make up the NBOD. This is policy making body for the organization. Morning sessions focused on finance and business management.

Abe Joseph, Nat'l BDPA VP-Finance ran the numbers for the board. Indications are that the conference will be financially success!

Yvette Graham, Nat'l BDPA President-Elect provided an update on her business area using the balanced scorecard metrics. Focus of her presentation dealt with national website, branding excellence and corporate sales. Yvette agreed to take on responsibility for the 2009 conference operations and national headquarters operations.

The NBOD luncheon sponsored by Electronic Data Systems (EDS). The guest speaker was Ron Griggs. He is an executive with 27-years of experience in the IT industry. He is the executive at the company responsible for the funding of EDS' Silver-level sponsorship. The sponsorship included conference registrations and corporate memberships for 30 EDS associates. Ron shared some insights on career growth and based on his personal experiences at IBM, EDS and elsewhere. He made a number of observations including:
  • complete college degree
  • be willing to accept laterals or pay cut to gain necessary experience
  • be willing to relocate if necessary
  • be willing to tackle difficult jobs at your company
  • critical to have balance in life (family, career, health, relationship and so forth)
  • important to get a mentor (e.g., his mentor gave him tips on getting exposure in his company that helped get him into the executive level at his company)
  • be prepared; prepare yourself
  • stay cool under pressure
  • keep things under perspective
  • whereever you are ... be there! Don't focus on future goals at the exclusion of delivering outstanding performance at your current position

The Q&A session was very active. Ron discussed EDS buyout by HP, mentor vs. coach, suggestion for improving BDPA and much more. He provide some good reminders on things to consider for career growth and advancement.

I lost wireless access in the afternoon. There were excellent presentations made by Kimberly Davis (VP-Member Services), Eatonia Williams (VP-Membership Management), Paulette Johnson-Davis (Chapter President Liaison) and Denise Holland (National President). The meeting adjourned with much information and camraderie. I do have .ppt version of all the presentations given at the NBOD meeting today. Respond in the COMMENTS section if you want copy of any particular presentation.

I hope that we can get wireless connection available for tomorrow! In the meantime, I invite you to follow our conference updates on Twitter as well.

Women in Technology (Austin)

We are very proud of the growth of our BDPA chapter in Central Texas. BDPA Austin chapter began the year as the 33rd largest chapter in the country. We are moving into the 4th quarter of the year ... and the chapter has increased their membership by 100% and moved up to become the 20th largest chapter in the country. The growth of this chapter is directly related to the meaningful programs and services provided for their members.

One such service is the monthly program meeting. BDPA Austin chapter will focus on Women in Technology at their October 16th program meeting. All IT professionals in central Texas are invited to share their concerns, ideas, thoughts and questions with some powerful women in our industry. The panel discussion with women from different levels of management who will discuss what it means for women to be in technology.

Here are the logistics for the meeting:

Tuesday, October 16, 2007, 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM
Mitchie’s Fine Art and Gallery
Lincoln Village Shopping Center located at IH 35 and Hwy 290

This is a great topic ... and particularly timely for BDPA as our national presidents from 2006 thru 2011 are powerful sisters (Gina Billings, Denise Holland and Yvette Graham) and our current president in Austin is a sister entrepreneur (Lorna Stewart-Booker).

Any Austin area readers out there?

A Class Act: Norm Fleming

Norm Fleming added professionalism and a challenging vision for BDPA's future in his recent run for the president-elect office. The decision was a tough one for the delegates as evidenced by the fact that a second round of voting was necessary before Yvette Graham won the office in a 3-way election that included Betty Hutchins.

Norm took time after the election to share the following thoughts with BDPA leaders around the country,

My Dear Leaders of BDPA,

Words cannot begin to describe the enormous gratitude I have for the love, support, guidance, and cordiality extended to me over the past three months, as I sought to serve you as your National BDPA President-Elect. Thanks to each and every one of you. God has a blessing for you.

We ran a good, clean, professional, and spirited race. We set a high standard that has created a new BDPA precedent, and for that I am most appreciative. Congratulations to Yvette Graham! She will serve this organization with the highest degree of Dedication and Excellence! Thank You to Betty Hutchins! Her passion and intrinsic executive knowledge of BDPA was simply phenomenal.

While I may not have won at the poll, I do believe BDPA won, as we all have raised the consciousness of the members regarding a new direction for BDPA for a new century. May God bless each of you. May God bless BDPA!

-Norm
I will take the liberty to speak for all BDPA leaders in hoping that Norm accepts one of the many offers being made to him by both National BDPA, BDPA Philadelphia chapter and BDPA Education & Technology Foundation. His talents, vision and leadership are too important to BDPA to lose at this stage of our history.

Norm ... please find a place for your prominent talents to be displayed over the coming months and years!
