National BDPA Elections (2016-2017)
National BDPA conducted its bi-annual elections earlier this month. Here are election results for the organization's board of directors. The two-year terms of the newly elected board members will begin January 1, 2016. Election results for the National BDPA Board of Directors are as follows.
These newly-elected officers will join with other soon-to-be appointed officers under the leadership of our incoming National BDPA President Mike Williams. All of BDPA-Nation wishes the very best to each of these brothers and sisters for stepping up to serve as regional and national leaders for our organization. Our plan is to be the wind beneath their wings over the coming two years!

Best Practices for BDPA Computer Camps (Los Angeles)
BDPA chapters around the nation are ramping up their Student Information Technology Education & Scholarship (SITES) programs for 2013. One component of the SITES program is a computer camp for high school students that takes place on Saturdays with volunteer instructors.
One of the fastest-growing computer camps is hosted by BDPA Los Angeles chapter. BDPA Los Angeles chapter president John Malonson recently shared some of the 'best practices' used by his chapter:

- Google Services - Use Google Docs Forms to create registration forms (the back-end spreadsheet can then be easily shared and viewed by whomever you'd like to have access). Believe me, it makes the registration process super easy and hassle free. The form can be used to track volunteers and trainers as well. Here's an example of our form from this year -- http://www.bdpa.org/members/group_content_view.asp?group=71844&id=173042
- Radio advertisement when it's time to fill the pipeline - Our students that took us to the #3 spot last year are in or close to their last year of eligibility so it was time to glut the incoming pipeline. We advertised on a well-known African American LA radio station (KJLH 102.3) which led to 80% of our incoming class and indirectly served the benefit of advertising our organization. Here's our Radio script - https://docs.google.com/document/d/124r9ZWCm0ObwrUE7IIOObqINC8D7ni3MvE9xCMLMJvg/edit
- Personal Contact - I personally fielded over a hundred calls of people interested in the program even though the registration fee is $125 for our program. To increase membership, my vision was to basically make the program free for parents and students that are members of BDPA (i.e $100 for adult membership, $25 for student membership). If you don't have one already, you should consider signing up for a Google Voice account since it transcribes voice-mails for you and sends them to your inbox.
- Class Schedule - This year we divided the program into 2 tracks (Beginner 12-2pm and Advanced 10-12pm). Our advanced track is primarily for returners so they don't get bored going over stuff they already know. Our program runs from Feb 2nd thru May 11th. Then we'll select our team and will work with them up until the conference.
- Finding Trainers / Volunteers - This is the most difficult part. General administrative trainers can be pulled from the parent population if need be. For technical trainers, you basically need to be finding and recruiting them 24/7/365. We found a few by joining Meetup.com groups that catered to our technology platform (HTML , CSS, PHP, etc). First you get friendly with these groups, THEN you start asking for volunteers to help out with "a wonderful program that will suit their talents and develop their leadership abilities".
- Topics to be taught this year: - Mobile Development (Android); HTML / CSS; PHP / MySQL; JQuery

Message From BDPA Los Angeles Chapter President
![]() |
John Malonson |
As president of the Los Angeles Chapter, it was my sincere pleasure opening the event and welcoming everyone as we celebrated a fantastic year. Our 2012 High School Computer Competition (HSCC) team placed 3rd out of 45 potential teams nationwide. Our chapter forged a partnership with Blacks in Technology (Los Angeles) online community. Also we had the pleasure of BETF executive director Wayne Hicks and his lovely mother, BDPA Los Angeles chapter past president Liz Hicks grace us with their presence for the second year in a row.
This year's event was more informal and low-key than past affairs. For example, our keynote speaker (Wayne) shared his message without a podium or microphone; however, he was more than open to the challenge!
Speaking from the top of his head and heart, Wayne re-affirmed to our audience all the good that BDPA does for our community as a national entity and the importance of an organization like ours. Since our event took place the day after the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Wayne challenged the "how could it happen here?" mentality shared by many in the media. Horrific events should not be enhanced or limited by geography. We must be mindful that an injustice anywhere is an injustice. As we grieved as a nation, we were reminded just how precious and fleeting life can be. However, we must actively combat apathy for the senseless lives lost everyday that don't make it to the news or happen all at once. Wayne imparted that each of us has the responsibility to be good to others and to make a positive impact on lives, especially our youth, wherever we go.

Grant Disbursement: BDPA Los Angeles ($6,092)
BDPA Education and Technology Foundation (BETF) is pleased to approve a $6,092 grant disbursement to the BDPA Los Angeles chapter.
The chapter VP-Finance David Malonson and chapter president John Malonson followed the BETF funding guidelines by submitting a funding request last week. The funds will be used to cover expenses for the 2012 computer camp including student lunches, supplies and books. The funding will also cover the expense of bringing a team of students and chaperones to Baltimore to represent southern California in the 2012 BDPA High School Computer Competition championship.
We still are working to fully fund the BDPA Los Angeles HSCC Scholarship Fund. Please help us with a small donation if you have time or inclination. In the meantime, we want to wish the LA chapter team well as they travel cross-country to the 2012 BDPA Technology Conference. As the song says, 'We Love L.A.'!

BDPA iRadio Show - June 14, 2011
BDPA Education and Technology Foundation (BETF) successfully produced its first Internet radio show! BETF is extremely grateful to Franne McNeal who served as the host of the BDPA iRadio Show. Franne was able to smoothly handle all of the challenges of bringing the BDPA message out to an international audience via BlogTalkRadio.
Our plan is to produce BDPA iRadio Show on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month. We hope that you will support our efforts. Here is the first show for your enjoyment!
The guests on the June 14th show were:
Wayne Hicks: executive director, BDPA Education and Technology Foundation (Twitter: BDPA) - focused on the evolution of BDPA and BETF over the past 35 years. Gave life to the 'classroom to the boardroom' tagline by sharing story of BDPA member Stephanie Lampkin Brown who has gone from being a high school student learning about computers through BDPA to now being an IT professional with one of the largest technology corporations in the world.
Julius Clark: information security officer, Wells Fargo (Twitter: JuliusClark) - shared his passion for information security as well as some insights on steps that we should take to avoid being hacked. You can learn more from his blog, Clark Thought Leadership.
Clifford Clarke: president, C2 IT Advisors - discussed the technological revolution and its impact on employment in the IT industry. Invited listeners to be part of the BDPA Entrepreneurial Fireside Chat taking place on June 15th.
Please share your feedback on the BDPA iRadio Show. Any questions or comments on the information provided in this week's show? What did you like? Tired of wondering which platform is the BEST? We finally settle the argument! Whether you have a smart phone, tablet, or are in the market for one; we invite you to join us for this month's program meeting, 'Apple iOS vs. Google Android: Mobility Smackdown' taking place on Tuesday, May 3, 2011.
Each month we celebrate the talents and services of our most exceptional members. This month, we recognize Temitope Sonuyi, our High School Computer Competition Lead Instructor.
Temitope has always been interested in creating things in general. Various influences lead him to MIT where he graduated with a masters and bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. During that time he interned at Microsoft, Qualcomm and the MIT MediaLab. After graduating Temitope worked as a developer for a startup where he developed a lot of his web development skills. He has since started a personal software consulting and development company, which is what he continues to do to this day. Temitope focuses on consulting with the creation and implementation of ideas for software applications.
Temitope, for all of your hard work and commitment to student excellence, BDPA Los Angeles chapter THANKS YOU!
We need your help! We are in need of High School Computer Competition technical and administrative volunteers. If you or someone you know possesses skill and talent in any of the following key areas, please contact info@bdpala.org

Find BDPA Volunteers in HandsOn Network

Anyhow, she contacted BDPA about Disney for a Day program created to inspire one million people to volunteer and celebrate volunteerism with a free ticket to a Disney theme park.
BDPA Education and Technology Foundation (BETF) ended up participating in this program through the HandsOn Network. HandsOn Network provides a remarkable process for any BDPA chapter to identify volunteers.
BDPA Orlando was the first chapter to take advantage of this program. Chapter president Pablo More wrote,
BDPA Orlando signed up thru the BDPA Foundation to participate in the Hands on Network Give-A-Day-Get-A-Disney-Day program. This program has been very successful for us in getting volunteers for various program meetings as well as for next month's Black Family Tech Awareness Week activities. We have received more than a dozen responses from potential volunteers in the first 2 weeks of the year. I would like to thank John Malonson, BDPA Los Angeles chapter President, for making us aware of this program, as well as Wayne Hicks (BDPA Foundation) for coordinating this fantastic program!
I encourage other chapters whom are in need of volunteers to take a look at this program and also search out other similar programs in your area that can be utilize like this for volunteers. I believe that we will see this model replay itself with other non-profit organizations and private enterprise giving the economic climate and the call for more community action and volunteering to help our neighbors and those less fortunate.
So far we have three chapters -- Los Angeles, New York and Orlando -- participating in this program. Who's next?

If you are interested in joining the BDPA Los Angeles Leadership Team, please contact John directly by email or phone (562.726-2677)."Volunteer Leadership has got to be one of the most challenging opportunities for anyone. I'm thankful for the above and beyond dedication that my team possesses and I am always looking for new leaders to welcome to our team!"

Message from Los Angeles Chapter President

If your new year resolutions involve transitioning into a career in IT, lending your talents, networking with others, or simply learning more about the changing IT marketplace, I encourage you to join us during our monthly sessions.
Last month, BDPA Los Angeles (BDPA-LA) held its Annual Holiday Awards Luncheon. Members came from as far away as Las Vegas, the Inland Empire and even Washington D.C. to participate in the gathering.
Fellowship was great as members relaxed and enjoyed sharing stories and updating one another on past events of the year.

On January 16th, we will be hosting "2010: The Year Ahead" to share the BDPA-LA Vision and Goals for the year.
This is also an excellent opportunity for you to share your thoughts and help us shape the organization to reflect your needs. Did you know that you could volunteer your time in exchange for a free day-pass to Disneyland?
Join us at this month's event to learn more. I look forward to seeing and hearing from you all!

Take Five: John Malonson (Los Angeles)

He was kind enough to participate in our Take Five interview series.
- How did you get involved in working with BDPA? - In 2003, I began looking for an African American organization with a focus on Information Technology. Needless to say, my journey started with Google. After being pointed in the right direction, I've been a member of BDPA ever since. It was never my intention to sit back and be a passive member. I knew the value that I brought to the table and welcomed the opportunity to give back to my community. Before as
suming the role of President, I actively got involved with my local chapter by serving as the HSCC Coordinator/Instructor from 2003-2008.
- What is the most rewarding aspect of working with BDPA? - The most rewarding aspect of working with BDPA is being able to bear witness to lives made better via access to information and technology.
- Tell us about a defining moment in your life? - A definitive moment in my life was my freshman year in college at UCLA. The year was 1995 and this thing called the "Internet" was moving fast and freely (via T1 connections) on college campuses while the rest of world moved sluggishly at 28.8k speed. Most people assume that I majored in Computer Science or Engineering; however, I actually majored in Psychology. After having access to all the world's information in an instant at my fingertips, I immediately knew which direction my career would take and I haven't looked back since.
- Who is your hero and why? - I honestly don't have a lone hero or one person that I look up to. I'd have to say that my heroes are those that came before me; both sung and unsung. It is because of them that I can hold my head high, befriend almost anyone of my choosing, and have access to all the opportunities that life has to offer.
- Any advice for people considering donation to BETF? - I'd like those considering donation to BETF to view it as an "investment" in our young leaders. If you need to check the ROI of your investment, the testimonies are there for public viewing. Although I've volunteered thousands of hours during my tenure with BDPA Los Angeles, I donate.
BDPA Los Angeles chapter is aggressively marketing itself via a variety of social networks that include Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn Network.
