Top 10 BDPA Chapters (Membership, February 2018)

The lifeblood of any nonprofit association is its membership. We continue to have a chapter who leads the nation in BDPA members.... BDPA Cincinnati. The chapter ... led by its president, Frank Hill ... continues to amaze others by its consistent growth. The chapter is significantly larger than the second largest chapter as they continue moving towards the next milestone of having 200 members this year.

We would also like to congratulate BDPA Bay Area (led by Gina Tomlinson) and BDPA Greater Tampa Bay Chapter (led by Andrea Johnson) for becoming an 'active' chapter by having more than the minimum level of membership. Gina and Andrea both realize that we need to work hard to keep membership growth and retention higher.

One of the common denominators for each of these chapters is that they place a high premium on the delivery of quality programs and services to their  members. These chapters work hard to ensure that there is a strong return on the $100 investment that each member makes thru annual dues.

Hello and Happy Black History Month.  I hope your year is off to a tremendous start.  I’m sure 2018 New Year Resolutions are being actively pursued and dreams are being realized.  I have been in the role of President for the BDPA Atlanta Chapter for over a year now.  I have seen a great deal of progression, however, there is still much more to do.  I am excited to work hand-and-hand with National BDPA leadership to continue to move the needle forward.

As members of BDPA Atlanta, I want to provide you an update on the State of the BDPA Atlanta Chapter.  This update will focus on professional membership, collegiate membership, Student Information Technology Education and Scholarship (SITES) & National High School Computer Competition (HSCC) Programs.

Professional Membership

Last year we had a number of sessions for professionals, however, we did not engage our professional members as much as we would have liked to.  This year we are seeking to ensure we host activities to reignite excitement around BDPA Atlanta.  We want to host activities that benefit our membership.  The first step to achieving success is by being transparent.  As a chapter, we have to bring focus to our professional members.  We are committed to this, however, we need your assistance.  We need your participation and volunteerism.  We want to ensure we are serving you in a way that contributes to your advancement.  You will see more communications from the Atlanta team, we simply ask that you respond by participating and volunteering.

If your membership has lapsed, I humbly ask that you give BDPA Atlanta Chapter another opportunity.  I believe if we work together we can reignite the success of the Atlanta Chapter.

Collegiate Membership

In conjunction with National BDPA, BDPA Atlanta is excited to announce plans to start collegiate chapters.  The initial chapters will be at the following institutions:
 

• Atlanta University Consortium (Clark Atlanta, Morehouse, and Spelman)
• Georgia State University
• Kennesaw State University

We are in the beginning stages of establishing these chapters.  If you know of students at any of these institutions or surrounding institutions please share this great news.  We will notify members of information sessions for each collegiate chapter.

SITES & HSCC

Last year was an exciting year for our youth programs.  We had over 40 high school students participate in HSCC, as well as a college student participate in the Mobile App Competition.  Our HSCC team finished 2^nd place for the coding competition.  That makes two 1^st and one 2^nd place finish in the last three years.  In addition, we won the 2017 Mobile Application Competition for High School participants.  Overall, we have achieved a great deal.

This year, we have over 75 participants in HSCC.  We are looking to maintain that count until the August competition.  The students are very excited!  We are also anticipating a significant increase in Mobile Application Competition participants.

Closing

As you can see, we have been doing a great deal in Atlanta, however, we know we can do more.  From National competitions, our students have been awarded over $40K+ in the last three years because of the commitments we have made to them, “From the classroom to the boardroom”.  As a member of BDPA Atlanta, you have contributed to that success.

Grant Declination: Cisco Foundation (BDPA Atlanta)

BDPA Education and Technology Foundation (BETF) worked with BDPA Atlanta chapter (president, Victor Montgomery) to submit a $15,000 grant proposal to the Cisco Foundation. If approved, the grant would provide partial funding for the Student Information Technology Education & Scholarship (SITES) program in Atlanta, GA.

Unfortunately, our grant proposal was declined. The declination letter read as follows:

Top 10 BDPA Chapters (Membership, October 2017)

Ebenezer Kyei-Baffour

The largest movement came from BDPA Southern Minnesota chapter who moved up to 8th place as a result of their success at the 2017 National BDPA High School Computer Competition.  Ebenezer Kyei-Baffour is the president of the chapter and they are doing well. His efforts have allowed BDPA to continue to grow.   He realizes that we need to work hard to keep membership growth and retention higher.

Long Story Short: Victor Montgomery (BDPA Atlanta)

Victor Montgomery (State Farm) is the chapter president of BDPA Atlanta.   BDPA Atlanta is the 5th largest BDPA chapter in the nation.  Victor is an innovative, forward thinking Information Technology (IT) leader, with over eleven years of IT experience.

A graduate of Illinois State University, Victor obtained his Bachelor's degree in Computer Information Systems in 2004. He joined State Farm in 2004 starting his career as a mainframe programmer. Victor is currently pursuing his Masters of Science in Computer Science from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He is very excited to be a part of the Georgia community helping to move IT forward. Victor and his wife, Malikah, have one daughter and two sons: Nailah, Victor Jr. and Benjamin.

HSCC Testimonial: Suntheng Taing (Atlanta, 2013)

Suntheng Taing

One of our most active and successful chapters in the High School Computer Competition (HSCC) is from Atlanta. BDPA Atlanta students earned 3rd-place in National BDPA High School Computer Competition (HSCC) championship held in August 2013. The HSCC competition comprises three components: oral testing, written testing and a programming project. Suntheng Taing was a member of the Atlanta team. He earned a $500 college scholarship that he would like us to apply towards Georgia State University. Suntheng was born in Phnom Penh, Cambodia and he currently lives in Lilburn, Georgia.

Suntheng wrote, "Growing up, my fascination with technology and art allowed me to create magnificent projects which resulted in my efforts to major in Computer Science. With my studious mindset, I chose Georgia State University as an opportunity to grow my intellectualism in the future."

When asked to share his thoughts on the HSCC competition, Suntheng wrote,

"It was an honor to be a part of the BDPA HSCC Atlanta Chapter. I enjoyed the marvelous teachers and coordinators that work hands-on with students who have an immense passion in the field of technology. The most memorable aspect of participating in the HSCC is knowing the determination in my peers and in myself. What struck me the most about my experience was the growth that I encountered in the Chapter because of the drive that I did not know I had."

Victor Montgomery

BDPA Atlanta chapter is the 3rd-largest chapter in the nation and they hosted the 2016 BDPA Technology Conference. The chapter is led by Victor Montgomery (State Farm). Victor is an innovative, forward thinking Information Technology (IT) leader, with over eleven years of IT experience. He draws upon his technical acumen as he contributes to the growth and maturity of State Farm's IT into the metro-Atlanta area.

2015 National BDPA High School Computer Competition (HSCC) Rankings

2015 National HSCC Champions * BDPA Atlanta

The 2015 National BDPA High School Computer Competition (HSCC) championships were held in Washington DC. We had 15 teams competing in 2015. The two-day competition was fierce and we had a new champion from Atlanta! The 2014 HSCC Champion were from BDPA Atlanta and they earned HP laptops and a $2,000 Dr. Jesse Bemley Scholarship for attending college. They beat out the defending championship team from BDPA Washington DC and the team who placed won the silver medal at the 2014 competition from BDPA Greater Columbia.

The winning team from Atlanta included Cameron Reaves, Saket Shirsath and Yash Shirsath.

BDPA Vice President Teresa Williams Named Top Ten Business Women of the Year

Teresa Williams

The American Business Women’s Association (ABWA) named Teresa Williams, as the 2017 American Business Woman of ABWA.  ABWA is a national program that honors 10 outstanding members for achieving excellence in career, education and community involvement. From those 10 honorees, one is selected to represent the Association, and all workingwomen, as the American Business Woman of ABWA.

“Top Ten candidates are a paradigm for ABWA members who strive for excellence in their careers, their communities, and in the Association,” says René Street, ABWA Executive Director. “It was a privilege to recognize these outstanding women this year at the National Women’s Leadership Conference in Chattanooga, TN and to gain inspiration from their accomplishments.”

Teresa is a Program Manager at NASCO, Inc. Teresa has over 30 years of experience in the Technology field. She joined NASCO in 2009 as a Sr. Project Manager and has held various leadership positions. In her current role as Program Manager, Teresa reports directly to David Weeks, NASCO’s Chief Technology Officer. Teresa is responsible for the overall program/project management & financial administration for the IT Strategy, IT Architecture, IT Data Management, & Information Security teams.

Teresa received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Applied Behavioral Science from National Louis University and a Master of Science in Technology Management from Mercer University. She is a Certified Project Management Professional (PMP).

Teresa is a 25-year member of the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA) and is a member of Pyramid Chapter, Atlanta, GA. She has served the association in many local chapter leadership roles including chapter president of Hidden Hills Chapter and Chairman of the Atlanta Area Council. She served on the 2002-2004 National Board of Directors as District I Vice President and National Secretary-Treasurer. She is currently the Atlanta Area Council 2016 Woman of the Year.

“To be selected as one of the 2017 Top Ten Business Women of ABWA is definitely an honor. When I joined ABWA in 1991, I was looking for opportunities to grow my professional leadership skills and to meet other like-minded women”, states Teresa.

ABWA provides women with a safe place to grow their leadership & team-building skills and provides opportunities to step out of your comfort zone. The members of ABWA champion each other which results in producing women leaders who are confident, resilient, and take the concept of women leaders “Leading In” seriously.

Teresa is currently the VP-Member Services for National BDPA. In the past, Teresa has been South Region Vice President since 2012 and she served as BDPA Atlanta chapter president in 2008-2009.

2011 National BDPA High School Computer Competition (HSCC) Rankings

The 2011 National BDPA High School Computer Competition (HSCC) championships were held in Chicago. We had 19 teams competing in 2011. The 2011 HSCC Champion were from BDPA Southern Minnesota and they earned $1,500 Dr. Jesse Bemley Scholarship for attending college. They beat out the student members from BDPA Detroit and BDPA Atlanta.

The winning HSCC team from Rochester MN included: Zakaria Ahmed, Hassan Hassan, Daniel Sheppard, Herchran Singh and Adwait Walimbe.

BDPA Education and Technology Foundation (BETF) is proud to note that we provided financial support to over half of the HSCC teams that competed this year ... including the Bemley Scholarshps provided to the top five (5) performing chapters in the national HSCC championships.

Top 10 BDPA Chapters (Membership, September 2016)

The lifeblood of any nonprofit association is its membership.  BDPA Cincinnati remains the #1 BDPA chapter in the nation.   The chapter ... led by its president,  Shawnda Peterson ... continues to amaze others by its consistent growth.   It will be interesting to see if the chapter can continue growing towards the next milestone of having 300 members this year.

We continue to operate under the leadership of National BDPA VP-Membership Management Mildred Allen.   Her team now includes Chad White (Dallas) and Judaea Lane (Memphis).  Her efforts have allowed BDPA to continue to grow.   She realizes that we need to work hard to keep membership growth and retention higher.

Loraine Stewart-David * BDPA Detroit President

BDPA Detroit was the fastest growing chapter in the nation last month.   It is now the 2nd largest chapter in September 2016.  The chapter is under the leadership of its president, Loraine Stewart-David.  There are a number of positive aspects of this chapter including its willingness to meet on a monthly basis at a local technology center. It is no accident that active efforts within a local BDPA chapter results in more members ... more members results in more membership dues ... which makes it easier to implement more consistent and effect programs and services. How are things going in your local chapter?

BDPA believes in the management maxim -- you get what you measure.  Let us assess the numbers in order to honor those local BDPA chapters who are demonstrating success in their efforts to recruit and retain members.  Let's take a look at the ten largest chapters in BDPA-Nation:

The number of chapters now belonging to the 'BDPA Century Club' currently stands at four.  The benefit of having powerful leadership is obvious when we see that Cincinnati, Detroit, Atlanta and Chicago each have over 100 members. One of the common denominators for each of these chapters is that they place a high premium on the delivery of quality programs and services to their members. These chapters work hard to ensure that there is a strong return on the $100 investment that each member makes thru annual dues.

National president Mike Williams recently touted the value that organizational re-branding has made on BDPA.  What are your thoughts about the value of BDPA membership? What can your local chapter do to improve the value-proposition for you on a personal or professional level?

We are very happy to see that National BDPA VP-Membership Management Mildred Allen has been asked by the current administration to stay on in her leadership role.  Her efforts have allowed BDPA to continue to grow.   She realizes that we need to work hard to keep membership growth and retention higher.

BDPA Atlanta HSCC Team (2016 Champions)

BDPA Atlanta chapter held its place as the 2nd largest chapter in August 2016.   Not only is the chapter growing its membership it is also winning the national High School Computer Competition with Noah Armstead, Wilfred Powell, Cameron Reaves, Malik Saafir and Saket Shirsath.   It is no accident that active efforts within a local BDPA chapter results in more members ... more members results in more membership dues ... which makes it easier to implement more consistent and effect programs and services.
