Election Results: BDPA New York (2014-2015)

BDPA New York chapter has a powerful legacy since its founding in November 1982. The chapter met on November 14, 2013 to determine the leaders who carry the baton in 2014-2015.

Please join the BDPA Education and Technology Foundation in thanking Renetta English and Wanda Jackson for their years of leadership service as they end their executive leadership roles with BDPA New York chapter.  It is worth noting that BDPA New York chapter won numerous chapter awards during their tenure including back-to-back 'Chapter of the Year' awards in 2011 and 2012.

2013 BDPA Chapter Management Award: New York

BDPA New York was awarded the Chapter Management Award for the third year in a row at the 2013 National BDPA Technology Conference at the Washington Hilton Hotel in Washington DC.

BDPA co-founder Earl Pace presented the Chapter Management Award during the opening ceremony. The BDPA Chapter Management Award was bestowed upon the BDPA New York and its members for their outstanding achievements in the operational and organizational management of their chapter.

The award was presented to the BDPA New York chapter president Renetta English.

BDPA is a global member focused organization that positions its members at the forefront of the IT industry. BDPA is committed to delivering IT excellence to their members, strategic partners, and community. The National BDPA Awards Program provides a means to recognize individual chapters and members for their outstanding achievements and contributions to the mission and objectives of the National organization.

BDPA New York chapter held its bi-annual elections at its November program meeting in accordance with its bylaws. The results of that election provided the following results:

I cannot believe how fast 2011 and my first year as President is zooming by.  I have enjoyed working with the Executive Board, Members and meeting so many of you at our numerous program meetings, networking events and community programs.

During 2011, the BDPA New York chapter has accomplished much with your support and our achievements were acknowledged by National BDPA who selected us 'Chapter of the Year'.

The BDPA iRadio Show creates a vibrant communications platform that speaks to all BDPA stakeholders.  We were blessed to have creativity from the show's host (Franne McNeal) and one of the scheduled guests (Renetta English)!

Renetta English - is the BDPA New York chapter president.  She shared 'best practices' from her chapter.   Her insights were remarkable and anyone who is involved in BDPA needs to take a moment to listen to what Renetta had to say.  Renetta is truly a remarkable chapter president!

Two other BDPA chapter presidents called into the show to share their insights as well.  BDPA Charlotte chapter president Julius Clark turned the discussion to the issue of members who are unemployed or under-employed.  He was looking for success stories where BDPA helped a member with his or her career.

BDPA New Jersey chapter president Goldie Bonney informed the audience of the Families In Technology Day activities hosted each year.   This year the chapter was able to raffle over 60 refurbished laptop computers to families in attendance.

Black Family Technology Awareness Week (New York)

BDPA New York chapter is truly reaching out to the community in their effort to provide access to technology education for everyone. This was never more evident than earlier this year when the chapter had the most powerful BDPA program in the nation during Black Family Technology Awareness Week (BFTAW).

I encourage all chapters to make the commitment now for the 2012 BFTAW program. It should be something we engage in within all 45 local BDPA chapters. It’s 3 months into the new year and I, along with the rest of the BDPA New York Executive Board, have been working very hard to make sure BDPA is no longer the 'best kept secret' in New York.

February was a very busy month for our chapter. As a new President, I learned so much by attending BDPA’s 1st quarter board meeting in Chicago. There, I had the opportunity to network with the officers on the National BDPA Board of Directors. Yvette Graham, our National President, and the National Executive Committee have a number of goals that have been met to “Take BDPA To The Next Level.” One of the goals was to implement our new website. Have you logged on and updated your profile?

On February 3rd we were featured on the TV program “Caribbean Classroom”. I, along with Denise Hamilton, Director of Education & Community Outreach, were interviewed by the host, John Crow, to discuss the importance of our organization to IT professionals, small business owners and students alike. BDPA NY was also recognized in print on BlackSci-Fi.com and in the February/March 2011 edition of Diversity Careers Magazine.

Moira Jack represented BDPA-NY as a presenter for Blacks at Microsoft (BAM) – Minority Student Day. Guy Duggins, Bilal Muhammad and Moira also represented BDPA at the Computer for Youth Family Computer event. Lastly, I along with members of the board represented the chapter at the Pace University Career Fair and Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s Martin Luther King and Black History Month events.

On February 26th we hosted our first community event for 2011 - Black Family Technology Awareness Week (BFTAW) at Abundant Life Christian Center in Brooklyn, NY. All in attendance felt BFTAW was an awesome and informative event. I was also pleased that BDPA members Bilal Muhammad, Guy Duggins, Jasmine Miller, Daniel Jean-Toussaint, Terence Hall, Minta Royster-Burke, and Cheri Jack volunteered their time.

IT Showcase Training Session

On March 5th we launched our IT Showcase Program at the Brooklyn Business Library. I would like to thank Carol Anthony, Director of IT Showcase for her hard work in recruiting our students. Please contact Carol at itshowcase@bdpa-ny.org if you are interested in being a mentor.

Again, I want to remind everyone that we are actively seeking volunteers for our committees and 2011 events and initiatives. We need volunteers to lead or serve on committees in the following areas: Education, Membership, Community Service and Fundraising. I hope that many of you step up to volunteer in some capacity.

Dear Members,

I cannot believe that it is already February and we are celebrating Black History Month. This is the month that BDPA New York will host our annual Black Family Technology Awareness Event, in recognition of Black Family Technology Awareness Week. I am so excited and looking forward to seeing you on Feb 26th at the Abundant Life Christian Center in Brooklyn, NY, as we share the importance of Education, Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Careers with the community.

Last month, we had a very successful Meet and Greet on January 19th at the Empire Hotel Rooftop in New York. Members and guests had the opportunity to meet and mingle with myself, and the rest of our 2011 Executive Board, and learn more about what our chapter has planned for 2011.

I wanted to remind everyone that we are actively seeking volunteers for our committees and 2011 events and initiatives. We need volunteers to lead or serve on committees in the following areas: Education, Membership, Community Service and Fundraising. I hope that many of you step up to volunteer, to speak and present at our program meetings, or to mentor our IT Showcase students.

Today, Monday, as I reflect on the impact of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King on our country and throughout world, I remembered he was a leader in organizations like the NAACP, Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and the Montgomery Improvement Association.

Why is this important?

Martin Luther King was a fearless leader and he realized that collective participation of members in these organizations was the only way to fight for our social and economic civil rights.

Dear BDPA Members and Supporters,

BDPA New York is officially inviting high school and college students to participate in our 2011 Information Technology (IT Showcase) program.

The Information Technology (IT) Showcase allows student presenters to showcase their talents by presenting technology based research projects. The presentations represent advanced STEM based topics delivered by highly motivated high school and undergraduate college students. Each student researches a technology based topic and drafts a college level research paper. The students also prepare a poster or information board presenting the results of their research. The papers are submitted for presentation to corporate, educational and industry leaders. Student papers are sometimes published and the students may be invited to present at professional Technology workshops such as the TeraGrid and the National BDPA Annual Technology Conference.

BDPA Members we need you to volunteer to be mentors for our students to assist them in a variety of areas from January 2011 - August 2011.

Message from New York Chapter President-Elect

I would first like to thank Judaea for her years of diligent service to our chapter and to the National organization.

I am so excited and ready to run the 2011-2012 race by representing the BDPA New York chapter, which is truly a premiere organization for Information Technology professionals. I appreciate the new members that have accepted leadership positions in our chapter. Time is of the essence and 2011 is right around the corner. The baton has been passed to a new 2011 team and its time to run the relay. Below are some of the initiatives for 2011:

• January - our organization volunteers for Rainbow PUSH Coalition’s Annual Wall Street Project. Kim Smith, our newly appointed VP of Membership Management, is currently seeking volunteers to attend and to participate in the career fair. This is an opportunity for us all to promote National BDPA and to support one of our members, Andrew Carr, Executive Director of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition. • February - Black Family Technology Awareness Week (BFTAW). Please contact Cheryl Nedwell or Damon Holmes to join the BFTAW Committee. Meetings are every Tuesday at 9:00 pm. Email bftaw@bdpany.org if interested in joining the committee.
• March - We will be hosting an Information Technology and Emergency Management Symposium. The Symposium will explore and identify the links between emergency management partners and information technology.

As stated in my campaign platform, New York City is the center of the world and as you can see we have a number of programs planned in 2011. New York City deserves an organization for INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY professionals that’s as dynamic as the city. To achieve this, we must all work together to participate in and promote the goals and mission of BDPA.

Election Results: BDPA New York (2011-2012)

We are pleased to announce that Renetta English has been elected to serve as 2011-2012 chapter president by the members of the BDPA New York chapter.   BDPA New York chapter has a lengthy and important legacy ... and Renetta is making the commitment to lead her chapter to the next level as we enter into the new decade.

Renetta is one of the hardest-working members in BDPA. She has been a member of BDPA since 2004 serving in several leadership roles. In 2008, she was the chapter's director of human resources. Currently, she serves as the chapter's vice president of Membership Management. It is worth noting that BDPA New York chapter membership has grown by 30% since she accepted this leadership role.

Renetta is dedicated to BDPA and believes it to be a premiere organization for IT professionals.

"We must all work together to participate in and promote the goald and mission of BDPA."

Renetta laid out her campaign platform to the chapter membership prior to the election.
