2016 Leaders for the Future Awards (Cincinnati, OH)

The Reaching for the Stars Program takes great pleasure in identifying, saluting, and creating awareness of young leaders in the African American community.  This year they are honoring ten exceptional high school sophomores and juniors destined to be future leaders in the greater Cincinnati area.  These emerging leaders epitomize excellence in character, service, and academic achievement. Their selection will be based on overall academic excellence, outstanding community service, and leadership.

Award recipients will be honored during a special recognition ceremony November 12^th at 2pm at the University of Cincinnati‘s African American Cultural and Resource Center. Courtis Fuller, WLWT-TV anchor, will be emcee.  There will be a reception immediately following the Program.  There is no charge. 

At 1pm there will be a Seminar on obtaining scholarships for minority students to attend the University of Cincinnati.  This Seminar will be hosted by Bleuzette Marshall, Chief Diversity Officer at UC and Attorney Robert Richardson, Chairman of the UC Board of Directors. This is an excellent opportunity for parents and students to get valuable information and meet key decision-makers. 

 

The Awards create a linkage for these young aspirants with established  and accomplished leaders in their professions and in their community.  We encourage students to come back to Cincinnati after their educational careers are over and help make Cincinnati great.   Propelled by their innate talents, lofty goals, and the encouragement of inspiring role models, these emerging leaders are encouraged to soar as they continue to fulfill their highest potential and ….reach for the stars!

NCWIT Seeks High School Girls for Aspirations in Computing Award

The NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing honors high school women who are active and interested in computing and technology, and encourages them to pursue their passions. BDPA Cincinnati student member Hadiya Harrigan won this national award in 2014.  This multi-tiered competition includes recognition at the national level (sponsored by Bank of America) and at the local level (sponsored by Microsoft).

BDPA Announces Annual Awards Luncheon to Honor Members & Sponsors

BDPA Cincinnati Chapter is pleased to announce the 10th Annual Awards Luncheon (THEME: 'Embracing the Digital Future') to be held at the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber (3 E. 4th Street; Cincinnati 45202) on April 10, 2015. BDPA plans to recognize its outstanding volunteer members and corporate sponsors. The chapter is a professional organization that seeks to advance the careers of African Americans in the information technology industry from the classroom to the boardroom via its programs and services.

“BDPA Cincinnati is a safe place to volunteer and sharpen corporate leadership skills”, said Awards Luncheon chairperson Janice Lee. “This luncheon lets us thank the volunteers who ‘do the work’ and the corporate sponsors who provide financial support and advice to the chapter’s board of directors.”

The luncheon will honor five individuals and one corporation for the chapter’s highest honors. The following awards will be presented: Community Service Award, Corporate Sponsor of the Year, Director of the Year, Executive Officer of the Year, Member of the Year and Spirit Award

H.O.P.E. Project Founder Selected as BDPA Washington DC Member of the Year

Raymond Bell has been named BDPA Washington DC chapter 'Member of the Year'. As founder and executive director of The H.O.P.E. Project, Mr. Bell’s program has excelled in helping more young adults gain meaningful employment and technical experiences in a very competitive workforce.

Based in the District of Columbia, The H.O.P.E. Project is a unique technical career training operation designed to rapidly prepare socially and economically disadvantaged young adults ranging in ages from 18 to 24 for rewarding careers with advancement as Help Desk Technicians and Application Support Professionals with information technology industry bona fides, CompTIA certifications, or security clearances.

BDPA Eminence in Broadcasting Award Goest to The IndyChannel's Larry Blackerby and Ericka Flye

Nominated and recognized as one of the best in the business, Larry Blackerby, general manager, WRTV6, The IndyChannel and Ericka Flye, WRTV6 News Anchor will be presented with the 1st annual BDPA Eminence in Broadcasting Award during the 36th annual National BDPA Technology Conference awards gala on Saturday, August 9, 2014 in Indianapolis.

“Recognized for their distinction in ethics and journalistic principles, continuous commitment to community good, and leadership that honors accuracy and innovation in reporting, we are honored to present this most distinguished award,” said Dr. Craig Brown, National BDPA president. “Additionally, BDPA is privileged to present our prestigious 2014 BDPA Eminence Award to Emmy-nominated reporter and Emmy-nominated host of "Indianapolis This Week, Ms. Ericka Flye,” he added.

BDPA recognizes WRTV6, TheIndyChannel, for their outstanding achievements in electronic journalism and receiving top honors from the Indiana Associated Press, the Indiana Society of Professional Journalists, and the Indiana Broadcaster Association’s Station of the Year Award.

“BDPA would like to honor General Manager Larry Blackerby for his continued excellence in support of WRTV6. The IndyChannel has over 65 years in broadcasting history and won the 2013 Regional Edward R. Murrow Award,” stated Pamela Sexton, National BDPA vice president.

BDPA Student Wins National Aspirations in Computing Award

Hadiya Harrigan, senior at Seven Hills Upper School, has been selected as one of 35 high school students in the United States to receive the 2014 Aspirations in Computing award. The National Center for Women and Information Technology (NCWIT) selected Hadiya from a diverse applicant pool of more than 2,300 students.

Hadiya has been very active in the BDPA Cincinnati chapter for several years. She participated in our High School Computer Camp, national competitions, and most recently received a sponsored internship with Luxottica. She won the 2013 Oracle Scholarship for BDPA Students as well.

BDPA is extremely excited about Hadiya's achievement and wait anxiously for what is next to come.

“Congratulations to our very own Hadiya Harrigan on her being awarded the NCWIT Aspirations in Computing award! Hadiya represents the all that is valuable for those volunteers and corporate sponsors who invest in BDPA programs that take our students from the classroom to the boardroom”, said BDPA Cincinnati chapter president Dalric Webb. “Hadiya’s personal drive, ambition, and talent are a perfect complement for the BDPA SITES and STEM based initiatives. Since 2007, the Award for Aspirations in Computing has recognized more than 2,200 young women; more than 71 percent of the recipients currently in college report majoring or minoring in a traditionally male-dominated STEM field. The Award for Aspirations in Computing is a component of NCWIT Aspirations in Computing, a talent development initiative designed to increase female participation in technology by providing structured, long-term engagement and support from middle school through high school and from college into the workforce. The Aspirations in Computing Award is supported nationally by AT&T, Bank of America, Bloomberg, and Microsoft.

Nominations Open for 2014 BDPA Individual Epsilon Awards

The National BDPA Individual Epsilon Awards recognize members who have demonstrated exceptional results in one of the five (5) categories below. Nominations are accepted and evaluated by a team of National BDPA members in accordance with the descriptions below. In 2014, we will award one (1) recipient per category.

Award recipients will be announced: June 6, 2014

Nominations packages must include:

• Career resume including education, positions held, awards and recognition and professional association affiliations
• A completed Nomination form. Incomplete submissions will result in a candidate being disqualified from consideration.
• A professional portrait image of the candidate, appropriate for publication with the award citation.

The Award categories and descriptions are:

• Career Achievement - Experienced professionals who have achieved significant career accomplishments and/or made contributions throughout their career to their company or industry

BDPA Lifetime Achievement Award: Dr. Freeman Hrabowski (UMBC President)

Dr. Freeman Hrabowski (president, University of Maryland, Baltimore County) received a BDPA Lifetime Achievement Award during the 2013 BDPA Technology Conference. He shared his thoughts on this award via this video clip.



Dr. Hrabowski is a leading advocate for getting diversity in higher education and is committed to helping students of all backgrounds pursue their dreams of becoming scientists and engineers. President Barack Obama recently named him chair of the President's Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for African Americans.

Top 10 BDPA Chapters (Membership, August 2013)

The lifeblood of any nonprofit association is its membership. As such it is good to note that BDPA membership has grown for the 2nd straight month. In fact, the total membership in BDPA has grown over 9% from this same time last year! Congratulations to National BDPA VP-Membership Management Curtis Jenkins for the work being done within his business area to move membership recruitment and retention in the right direction.

There is a new chapter in the 'BDPA Century Club'! The benefit of hosting an annual conference are obvious when we see that BDPA Washington DC chapter joined Chicago and Philadelphia as a third member of the 'BDPA Century Club', which means that they each have over 100 members. One of the common denominators for each of these chapters is that they place a high premium on the delivery of quality programs and services to their members. These chapters work hard to ensure that there is a strong return on the $100 investment that each member makes thru annual dues.

2013 BDPA Chapter Management Award: New York

BDPA New York was awarded the Chapter Management Award for the third year in a row at the 2013 National BDPA Technology Conference at the Washington Hilton Hotel in Washington DC.

BDPA co-founder Earl Pace presented the Chapter Management Award during the opening ceremony. The BDPA Chapter Management Award was bestowed upon the BDPA New York and its members for their outstanding achievements in the operational and organizational management of their chapter.

The award was presented to the BDPA New York chapter president Renetta English.

BDPA Joins with President Obama’s Council on Service and Civic Participation to Deliver President’s Volunteer Service Award

BDPA announced today that they have teamed up with the White House to become a Certifying Organization for the PRESIDENT’S VOLUNTEER SERVICE AWARD, a national program recognizing Americans who have demonstrated a sustained commitment to volunteer service. Established in 2003, the AWARD was created by President George W. Bush to give Presidential recognition to individuals, families, and groups who meet requirements for volunteer service, measured by the number of service hours performed over twelve months. [SOURCE]

BDPA is one of many organizations that have joined forces to deliver the PRESIDENT’S VOLUNTEER SERVICE AWARD and honor the volunteers who strengthen our nation. As a Certifying Organization for the AWARD, BDPA is responsible for verifying service hours, nominating potential recipients, and delivering the AWARD.

The Council is composed of leaders in government, media, entertainment, business, education, nonprofit, volunteer service organizations, and community volunteering.

BDPA was founded in 1975 by Earl Pace and the late David Wimberly as an answer to minimal African American representation in the technology field. Today, BDPA is a nationally recognized technology-focused organization with 46 active chapters in the United States. They boast a diverse and varied membership, including programmers, analysts, engineers, managers, instructors, students, and entrepreneurs.

BDPA Philadelphia Chapter President Receives Local NAACP Honor

BDPA Philadelphia chapter president Eileen Gadsden was honored by the NAACP Philadelphia as one of 104 Most Influential Women at an awards ceremony held March 24, 2013 in Philadelphia.

104 deserving women were chosen from the ranks of elected officials, entrepreneurs, non-profits, civic leaders, educators, labor leaders, members of the clergy, media, health care providers, government agency leaders, corporate America leaders, community leaders, professionals and entrepreneurs. Eileen was commended for her work as a community leader.  Eileen shared the following comment about the honor,

"I was surprised, humbled, and overjoyed by the idea of sharing such an accolade with 103 talented, driven and accomplished women. I am truly encouraged and will continue the work of BDPA to inspire students and professionals to pursue IT and other STEM related careers to reduce the digital divide and to secure our place as innovators and decision-makers in this global marketplace."

BDPA's Hadiya Harrigan Wins NCWIT Ohio Award for Aspirations in Computing

BDPA Education and Technology Foundation congratulates Hadiya Harrigan for being selected as a 2012-2013 winner of the NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing Ohio Affiliate. Hadiya competed in the 2011 and 2012 National BDPA High School Computer Competition (HSCC) championships as a member of the team trained by BDPA Cincinnati chapter.  She is currently a senior at Seven Hills Upper School in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The NCWIT Award for Aspirations recognized Hadiya for her computing-related aspirations and for her demonstrated, outstanding aptitude and interest in information technology/computing; solid leadership ability; good academic history; and plans for post-secondary education.  Not only did Hadiya win the award for the state of Ohio ... she was also named a National Award runner-up.


BDPA Cincinnati HSCC coordinator Frank Hill wrote,

"I have watched Hadiya grow rapidly from beginner to high proficiency in both Information Technology and leadership. Hadiya demonstrated exceptional technology skills during 2012 by first completing an 32-week advanced IT training course and then serving as the project manager and lead developer for the Cincinnati HSCC team that finished in 7th place (out of 45 eligible BDPA chapters).

Hadiya has developed technical skills in database design; JavaScript programming; ASP.NET Programming; Visual Basic Programming; HTML; SQL; Web Application Design and User Interface Layout. Haydia used her skills to teach and coach fellow students.
