Benard Bampoh (Southern Minnesota) Wins 1st Annual Lockheed Martin Scholarship for BDPA Students

BDPA awarded the first annual 'Lockheed Martin Scholarship for BDPA Students' at the 2013 BDPA Technology Conference held in Washington DC. The winner was a remarkable young man - Benard Bampoh - who is a rising senior at Century High School in Rochester, MN. Bernard participated in the BDPA Youth Technology Camp (YTC) as a member of the BDPA Southern Minnesota chapter.

The Lockheed Martin Scholarship for BDPA Students encourages a current or rising high school senior to pursue a STEM-based college curriculum. The student must be a registered participant in the annual YTC. The decision on scholarship winners would be two-fold.

First, we accepted nominations from each chapter that is sent a YTC student to the conference. The survey was character-based and focused on areas such as behavior, preparation, responsibility, communication, attendance, team ethic and integrity.

Second, the scholarship winner must demonstrate onsite excellence during the onsite YTC workshops and activities.

Benard submitted this video vignette as part of his scholarship application package to share his interest in STEM education as well as his desire to become our first BDPA-Lockheed Scholar.



The scholarship is administered by the BDPA Education and Technology Foundation.

2. Align with one or more of Lockheed Martin’s focus areas: Education, Customer & Constituent Relations, and Community Outreach
3. Be located or operate in a community in which Lockheed Martin has employees. Company operations in: MD, AL, AZ, CA, CO, FL, GA, LA, MN, NJ, NM, NY, OH, PA, TX, VA, AR, HI, IL, MA, NE, NV, NH, OK, SC, WA, WV.
4. Each organization is limited to one grant per year, except in unusual circumstances
5. Demonstrate fiscal and administrative responsibility and stability and have an active, diverse board, effective leadership, continuity and efficiency of administration

Lockheed Martin will provide consideration to requests that best address the focus area targets and reflect the organizations effective leadership, fiscal responsibility, and programmatic success.

Grant Declination: Lockheed Martin Corporation Foundation (BDPA Los Angeles)

We were disappointed to learn that our grant proposal to Lockheed Martin Corporation Foundation was turned down. BDPA Education and Technology Foundation (BETF) asked Lockheed Martin to provide us with $5,000 funding in support of the student programs implemented by our BDPA Los Angeles chapter.

I received your request for financial support of the BDPA LA. I regret to inform you that our budget is not large enough to support programs that are outside of our immediate geographical area. We are investing a great deal of time in terms of mentorship and in financial support for programs that are similar to this here in the Antelope Valley.

BETF will continue to seek funding for BDPA Los Angeles chapter. We are open to ideas from you about fundraising opportunities that we might be missing.

In the meantime, we would also like to ask your support in reaching our goal to fully fund the Brandon Gardner Memorial Scholarship Fund so that we might provide college scholarships to the students representing Los Angeles chapter at the 2011 national HSCC championships to be held in Chicago.

BDPA Education and Technology Foundation (BETF) and BDPA Los Angeles chapter worked together on a grant proposal to the Lockheed Martin Corporation Foundation. We have successfully completed Step #3 in the 7-step funding process that is available to National BDPA and its 45 local chapters.

We should hear from Lockheed Martin on this funding request sometime during the first quarter of 2010. Wish us luck!
