High School Computer Competition (Dallas, 2014)

BDPA Dallas chapter (founded in 1987) has been on the journey towards winning a national BDPA High School Computer Competition (HSCC) championship for over 20 years. The chapter leaders shared some of their thoughts on impact that the Student Information Technology Education & Scholarship (SITES) program has had on them and the students who receive this STEM-based training in this video:

The SITES program in Dallas is a collaborative learning experience that gives students an opportunity to develop higher order thinking skills and problem solving in a real world context. They will learn how to create dynamic web sites using HTML, CSS, PHP and JAVA. Participants develop interpersonal, teamwork skills and they learn how to create and develop presentations. These students will also learn public speaking skills, time management skills, how to set and achieve goals and working in a team environment.

The 2014 HSCC team being trained by Dallas chapter seeks to win the championship this year!

L-R: Tatiana Madrigal, Maxwell Nwafor, Christion Lankford, Brandon Pham, Chad White (instructor)
The major corporate sponsor for the chapter is JPMorgan Chase.   However, we need our blog readers to do their part ... you can help BDPA Dallas motivate their students by helping them raise funds to give out college scholarships. Please take a moment to make a secure online donation to the BDPA Dallas HSCC Scholarship Fund.

BDPA New Jersey Hosts 10th Annual Families in Technology Day

The New Jersey chapter of the largest organization of African Americans in STEM industries, BDPA, is hosting its 10th Annual Families in Technology Day on June 8, 2013. This all-day event will encourage students and their parents to explore the tech arena, and learn the ins and outs from many of the industries’ finest teachers. Held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, the event will include workshops, instruction and an inspiring message from keynote speaker, Dr. Randal Pinkett.
Goldie Bonney
BDPA New Jersey president Goldie Bonney is excited about the 10-year mark of this event. “We’re proud to reach another milestone in technology for our organization. With the way STEM is constantly changing, it’s important for us to make sure the community, especially the students, are equipped and empowered with the tools to stay in demand,” explains Bonney. “Through the support of our sponsors JPMorgan Chase, Johnson & Johnson, and Prudential, we’re anticipating hundreds to attend this year.”
Students have been notoriously intimidated by curriculum associated with going into the technology industry, yet the career opportunities are rapidly growing, with demand at an all-time high for STEM educators and industry professionals.

Laptops will be raffled to students between grades four and twelve who register and submit the required one-paragraph personal statement of their potential personal benefits from receiving computers via the chapter’s Eventbrite site.

The keynote speaker, Pinkett, says he embraces the opportunity to inspire young people, and help them become less intimidated by coursework and opportunities in technology. As the co-founder, chairman and chief executive officer of BCT Partners, Pinkett knows about entrepreneurship and opportunity for growth in technology, and insists on giving back.

The venue is the New Jersey Institute of Technology, located at 323 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd Newark, N.J., 07103, and the event’s low-cost admission is five dollars.

I want to thank Craig Collins (Student Programs Director) for working with the students throughout the National Competition, keeping things organized and making sure they were up and ready to go on time. This was not an easy task.

A GREAT BIG SPECIAL THANK YOU goes to JPMorgan Chase, who came through and financed our entire trip and experience at the National Conference. We were able to take eight (8) students and two Adults. This is awesome!! Caress Pendleton was the catalyst for getting JPMorgan Chase to continue to support our Chapter. BIG THANKS TO YOU!!! Thank you Karen Smith (JPMorgan Chase) for also supporting this effort.

We will begin our strategic planning for 2013 in September. Our 2013 Student Programs will begin in January. We have lots of work to do. In 2013, we would like to compete in all areas:

Kimberly Davis, President of JPMorgan Chase Foundation

Fast Company recently touted JPMorgan Chase Foundation president Kimberly Davis as one of this year's 'Most Creative People' as they wrote:
When Kimberly Davis flew from New York to San Diego to announce the $1 million recipient of JPMorgan Chase's crowdsourced philanthropy competition, the winners waiting for her on the other end weren't expecting much -- a buttoned-up figurehead, maybe, who would breeze in for 20 minutes, shaking hands and kissing babies for the cameras. "But she showed up at 6 a.m. and talked to every single volunteer about what they did at the organization," says Laren Poole, cofounder of Invisible Children. "It was so clear that she's the heartbeat behind the whole thing. She got it in a way that I didn't expect."
There are many JPMC employees in BDPA. I hope that many of them find a way to support BDPA Education and Technology Foundation in the weeks and months to come.

Payroll Pledge: JPMorgan Chase Good Works Employee Giving Campaign

JPMorgan Chase Foundation informed us that one of its employees directed her personal campaign pledge to the BDPA Education and Technology Foundation (BETF). BETF is proud to be one of the 4,500 nonprofit organizations supported by this employee giving campaign.

Earlier this year we learned that JPMorgan Chase Foundation was going to provide a 100% matching gift for a donation made by Estelle Cephas (Northern Delaware).

Our hope is that other JPMC employees will consider making payroll pledges to support BDPA programs and services.

JPMorgan Chase Employee Giving Campaign

The JPMorgan Chase Foundation informed us that employees of JPMorgan Chase (JPMC) have selected BDPA Education and Technology Foundation (BETF) as one of the organizations to which they have elected to make a one-time or recurring donation through the 2009 Good Words Employee Giving Campaign. The campaign is conducted annually to by JPMC to allow its employees to support the charities of their choice through one-time or reoccuring charitable donations. Employees can direct their funds to any nonprofit organization.

Payout of the funds to BETF is scheduled to begin in early 2010.

We are excited to see that more BDPA members or supporters are working with their employer to establish donations via payroll deductions. We need this support to continue funding scholarships and youth education programs for K-12 students around the nation.

There are alot of JPMC employees who support BDPA. Are any of 'em in your chapter? If so, make sure that they read this blog post!

JPMorgan Chase Foundation

JPMorgan Chase supports non-governmental organizations working internationally in three focus areas: community development, youth education, and arts and culture. Requests focusing on microfinance and small business development, low-income housing, youth education in low-income communities, and arts and culture projects aimed at promoting asset development in low-income communities are of particular interest.

Nonprofit organizations both inside and outside the U.S. where JPMorgan Chase has a grants program, including specific countries in the Asia/Pacific region, Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Latin America, as well as Canada, are eligible to apply.

Organizations based in the United States can apply throughout the year using the online letter of inquiry form available on the JPMorgan Chase website.

International organizations based outside the U.S. must submit a short preliminary proposal via email to the appropriate regional grant coordinator.
