Cybersecurity: A Shared Responsibility at Home and at Work

Guest Blogger: The Stop.Think.Connect. Campaign

As a member of BDPA you already know that cyberspace and its underlying infrastructure are vulnerable to a wide range of risks stemming from threats both physical and cyber. Cyberspace is particularly difficult to secure due to a number of factors: the ability of malicious actors to operate from anywhere in the world, the linkages between cyberspace and physical systems, and the difficulty in reducing vulnerabilities in complex cyber networks.

To create a safe, secure, and resilient cyber environment individuals of all ages and all segments of the community—from government and law enforcement, to IT professionals in all industries, and most importantly, members of the public, must do their part to help protect against cyber threats.

Everyone Has a Role to Play, Especially at Work

June is Internet Safety Month, a time to focus on the importance of online safety. Even in a technologically advanced workplace or as an IT professional, you can help make a difference in keeping your workplace cyber safe and spread cybersecurity awareness with these simple tips from the Department of Homeland Security’s Stop.Think.Connect.  Campaign:

Read and abide: Know and adhere to your company’s Internet use policy.

Password rules: Construct your passwords using a combination of numbers, symbols, and letters (uppercase and lowercase), and be sure to change them regularly (every 45 to 90 days).

No sharing: No matter the circumstances, don’t share any of your user names, passwords, or other computer or website access codes.

Trusted sources only: Only open emails or attachments from people you know.

Consult IT: Never install or connect any personal software or hardware to your organization’s network or systems without permission from your IT department.

Back It Up: Make electronic and physical back-ups or copies of all your most important work.

Report It: No matter how trivial, be sure to report all suspicious or unusual problems with your computer to your IT department.

Start a Culture of Online Safety at Home

According to the National Cyber Security Alliance, children and teens aged 8-18 devote an average of 7 hours and 38 minutes per day to electronic devices. If a child sleeps 8 hours a night, that means one-half the time he or she is awake is spent online. Below are some ways to keep your family safe while they’re there:

Add contacts and friends on social media responsibly: Only become friends on social media with people you actually know, and never share details like your address, your school, or even your last name with strangers.

Conduct safe searches: Perform Internet searches with very, very specific search terms so that they don’t yield unwanted results.

Use safety filters: Install safety filters that limit what kids can see and do online.

Investigate: Before your child visits a new website, check it out yourself.

Follow the Golden Rule: Parents and kids alike should remember, don’t say anything online about someone else that you wouldn’t want written about you.

Additional Resources:
• Sign up to receive alerts, tips, and other updates from the United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT).

• Get involved in the Critical Infrastructure Cyber Community or C³ (pronounced “C Cubed”) Voluntary Program to assist your company in using the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST) Cybersecurity Framework. Learn more here.

• Get videos, presentations, and other educational resources for parents to discuss cybersecurity with kids and teens from NetSmartz, a program of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC).

• Find tips and resources on how to become a good digital parent from the Family Online Safety Institute.

• Start an internet safety dialogue with ebooks, events, articles, and more from ConnectSafely, iKeepSafe, and Savvy Cyber Kids.

Eleanor Holmes Norton Honors BDPA in House of Representatives

Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, D-D.C., has issued a statement that was published in the Congressional Record on June 2 honoring the National BDPA. The congresswoman is addressing the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Ms. NORTON. Mr. Speaker, I rise today to ask the House of Representatives to join me in congratulating the National Black Data Processing Associates (BDPA) on its 40th anniversary of service to the residents of the District of Columbia and the national capital region.

Founded in May 1975 by Earl Pace and the late David Wimberly, BDPA was formed out of a concern shared by both men that minorities were not adequately represented in the information technology industry. The first BDPA chapter was organized in Philadelphia, PA in 1977. A year later, the second chapter was organized in Washington, D.C., and shortly thereafter, the third chapter was organized in Cleveland, OH. In 1979, BDPA was restructured as a national organization, and has 45 active chapters across the United States.

As the oldest and largest African American information technology organization, comprised of over 2,000 African-American IT professionals, as well as science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) college students, BDPA's vision is to be a powerful advocate for their interests within the global technology industry. Its mission is to be a global, member-focused technology organization that delivers programs and services for the professional well-being of its members.

BDPA continues to promote professional growth and technical development for young people and those entering into information and communication technology (ICT) in academia and corporate America. We also appreciate BDPA and its 45 chapters for continuing to provide ICT opportunities for STEM students and professionals.

Mr. Speaker, I ask the House of Representatives to join me in celebrating the 40th anniversary of the National Black Data Processing Associates, in congratulating BDPA for its outstanding accomplishments and commitment to the residents of the District of Columbia and around the country, and in welcoming those attending the BDPA Annual National Technology Conference and Career Fair, titled "Evolution of IT-- Embracing the Digital Future," on August 18-22, 2015, at the Washington Hilton Hotel.

Top 10 BDPA Chapters (Membership, May 2015)

The lifeblood of any nonprofit association is its membership.  There is a new membership champion in the BDPA family -- BDPA Cincinnati!   BDPA Cincinnati chapter, under the leadership of Dalric Webb, broke a streak of over 10 years that had been held by BDPA Chicago.   BDPA Cincinnati implemented a number of strategies and initiatives that allowed it to power up from the #5 slot it held in January 2014 ... leapfrogging BDPA chapters located in Atlanta, Chicago, Philadelphia and Washington DC.
Michael, Wayne, Audra, Patrick
The major membership growth by BDPA Cincinnati chapter can be attributed to its leadership in the Membership Management business area.  The chapter VP-Membership Management is Wayne Hicks.  He leads a team of directors -- Shelton Graves (Marketing), Patrick Nelson (Member Benefits), Michael Pulliam (Contact Management) and Audra Sweeney (Membership) -- who worked hard to improve the brand awareness of BDPA in the greater Cincinnati area.   The chapter effectively used its monthly program meetings to introduce itself to the community.  Finally, the chapter actively works to ensure a high retention rate amongst its members.

BDPA believes in the management maxim -- you get what you measure.  Let us assess the numbers in order to honor those local BDPA chapters who are demonstrating success in their efforts to recruit and retain members. Let's take a look at the ten largest chapters in BDPA-Nation:
  1. Cincinnati - president, Dalric Webb (up 1 spot)
  2. Chicago - president, Reggie Rush (down 1 spot)
  3. Detroit - president, Beverly Moore (up 1 spot)
  4. Philadelphia - president, Eileen Gadsden (down 1 spot)
  5. Washington DC - president, Perry Carter
  6. Atlanta - president, Derrick Brown (up 1 spot)
  7. Milwaukee - president, Carmen Giles (up 3 spots)
  8. New Jersey - president, Goldie Bonney (down 2 spots)
  9. Southern Minnesota - president, Will Smith
  10. Indianapolis - president, Terry Morris (down 2 spots)
)
Only three chapters remain in the 'BDPA Century Club'! The benefit of having powerful leadership is obvious when we see that Chicago and Cincinnati and Detroit each have over 100 members. One of the common denominators for each of these chapters is that they place a high premium on the delivery of quality programs and services to their members. These chapters work hard to ensure that there is a strong return on the $100 investment that each member makes thru annual dues.

Our national president recently announced that BDPA is offering complimentary renewal for any former BDPA member.   Just come to the website and use the membership code - juneonly.

What are your thoughts about the value of BDPA membership? What can your local chapter do to improve the value-proposition for you on a personal or professional level?

CRS Group Renews Corporate Support of BDPA Chicago Chapter

BDPA Chicago chapter provides a powerful return-on-investment to the CRS Group. As a result, the company agreed to renew its corporate support of BDPA Chicago by purchasing two memberships and a table at the chapter's annual Awards Banquet. The memberships will be used by CRS Group president Michael Gaines and senior account manager Nashunda Bolden. Nashunda also serves as the executive vice president for BDPA Chicago chapter.

Nashunda Bolden
Founded in 1994 as Computer Resource Solutions, CRS Group is a privately held company with offices in Itasca, IL and downtown Chicago.  CRS Group provides staffing solutions to Fortune 500 companies by successfully managing their IT contingent workforce needs. The company expanded its offerings to extend that same high-quality service to other business needs, including creative, marketing, finance, legal and human resources.

BDPA Chicago is the 2nd-largest chapter in the nation and one of the reasons for its success is corporate relationships developed with numerous companies in the area. BDPA delivers on its commitment to help its sponsors recruit diverse technology talent, retain current diverse technology workers, engage in active community outreach, maximize its supplier diversity achievements and increase market share within the organization and community.

Michael Gaines shared his thoughts about BDPA in a YouTube video a few years ago:

ThinkNext Invests in Future of BDPA Atlanta Students

Mike Williams
BDPA Atlanta chapter is proud to announce that ThinkNext agreed to invest half of the budget needed to take the High School Computer Competition (HSCC) team to compete at the 37th Annual BDPA Technology Conference in Washington DC on August 19-22, 2015. ThinkNext was founded by Mike Williams, a senior executive in the IT industry and the author of the book, 'The Advantage Factor: 12 Lessons Every Aspiring Young Professional Should Know'.

In addition to owning ThinkNext, Mike Williams is the current National BDPA vice president. A proud native of Paterson, New Jersey, Williams discovered his desire to give back in 1997 when he opened an Internet Café and began to provide free access to computers for disadvantaged youth. He taught them basic computer and Internet skills. Because of his commitment to community, mentorship, and technology, Williams contributes his time, treasure, and talents to support local and national nonprofit organizations that align with his personal mission and values.
I am very excited about BDPA’s future and its continuation of building on the 40-year legacy of developing future technology talent."
We encourage other senior IT leaders and business owners to find a way to support BDPA programs, scholarships or services at a local level. Please reach out to BDPA by email (corpsales@bdpa.org) or phone (301.584-3135, ext 108) if you want to follow the example set by Mike Williams in Atlanta.

Yusuph Mkangara Uses Bemley Scholarship at Harvard University

Yusuph Mkangara
We last heard from Yusuph Mkangara when he returned home after his first experience in the 2010 national High School Computer Competition (HSCC) championship. Since then this remarkable young man returned with his BDPA Columbus teammates to take home the bronze medal at the 2011 national HSCC championship ... earning a Bemley Scholarship. He graduated from high school and is now in his second year at Harvard University.

We asked this young man to update our audience on his educational journey:

My name is Yusuph Mkangara. I am from Columbus, Ohio and my family and I are originally from Tanzania. I participated in HSCC in 2010 and 2011 as a freshman and sophomore. I had never really thought about information technology as a career path but the program certainly paid dividends as our representative team from Columbus went on to take third place in 2011.
I received my high school diploma in 2013 and I am now attending Harvard University. My joint/double major is African Studies and Sociology. While I do not have a set career path yet, I am interested in the field of education and hope to teach and conduct research in education after graduation. In the past year, I have been fortunate enough to conduct research with the guidance of a professor at Harvard and a full research team as a partnership with a local Boston Area high school.
Rest assured, my interest in information technology and computer science is still alive and well. While my trajectory is not typical of those in the STEM fields, I am hoping to later on integrate IT skills in my work in education. One of the things that most excite me about the classroom of “tomorrow” is that technology has the potential to play a transformative role in how we approach education. I think with both technological know-how and experience as a teacher and researcher, I will be in a great position to innovate the field of education by using skills that I first began learning during preparation for my first HSCC."

Yusuph is an example of the powerful stories being told by all of the young people who participate in the K-12 STEM programs implemented by BDPA at a local, regional or national level. Many individuals and corporations see that BDPA is preparing and enabling the next generation of technology, STEM and digital thought leaders.

You can help! Please take a moment and make a donation to our Dr. Jesse Bemley Scholarship Fund.

Open Letter to Congressional Black Caucus from BDPA Member

Frank Anderson
To all of the Congressional Black Caucus members,

I’m writing in response to the article I read in the USA Today titled ‘Congressional Black Caucus seeks measures to improve tech diversity’. I have been in the Information Technology business for over 30 years. Over my career, I have seen some progress only to be followed by some digression in the information systems. Therefore, I was excited when I read about the 1.4 million new tech jobs being created. I’m in agreement with the Congressional Black Congress about ensuring that a large segment of the new hires are African Americans. There will be several things that would need to be put in place for that to become a reality. We need to ensure our community embraces technology, develop relationships with the business community and align with professional minority technology organizations.

I belong to a Black nonprofit organization known as BDPA (Black Data Processing Associates). For 40 years, since 1975, BDPA through its more than 45 chapters across the United States has promulgated the upward mobility of African Americans in Information Technology. Through local chapter program meetings, workshops, local community outreach and its Annual Conferences it has become the largest technology organization representing minorities in the nation. Its mantra is 'from the classroom to the boardroom'.

BDPA has given me the ability to embrace technology with the various levels of experiences of people that I have met since joining the organization in 1989. Secondly, its membership has allowed me to develop important relationships within the business community. Finally, during the early stages of my career, there were countless mentors that shared my common experiences that kept me on the path to my successful career.

To the Congressional Black Caucus, I believe that BDPA is ideally suited to help America reach your stated goal to ensure that a fair share of the 1.4 million new tech jobs can become a reality for the African American community and not just a wishful pursuit. I encourage you to reach out to our national BDPA president Pamela Mathews by email (president@bdpa.org) or phone (301.584-3135 ext. 111) and forge a strategic alliance that will make a difference for Blacks in technology.

Sincerely
Frank L. Anderson, Member

Reaching NUMBER ONE status is no simple accomplishment and takes the coordinated efforts of all of our volunteer leaders as well as our ability to deliver programs and activities that are of interest and value to the members of our communities. Congratulations to all!

Our VP-Member Services Karen Lipscomb and her team completed the first phase of our 2015 computer camp program. Over 20 dedicated middle and high school students completed our 13-week (every Saturday from 8 am to 2 pm) program at Cincinnati State Technical College. Congratulations to all the students who participated and to the seven students who will proceed forward into phase two of the program. You can read more about the students and their projects here. We are very much looking forward to the BDPA Midwest HSCC regional being held on June 20, 2015. Marketing IT: Alignment With Business - Fred Mapp (Quality Service Solutions)

Fred Mapp
Fred Mapp (president, Quality Service Solutions) suggests that the key to marketing information technology is improved relationship building with business stakeholders. However, IT does not get much credit for getting things done in this arena. Is your organization spending an enormous amount of time and energy on strategy development with little to show for your efforts? Management teams often get bogged down in unfocused, inconclusive discussions instead of making rapid, well-informed strategy decisions. To stay ahead of the pack you must market and translate your organization's strategy into basic day-to-day initiatives. How do you avoid or address these issues?

Mapp is scheduled to give his workshop, 'Marketing IT: Alignment With Business', on August 19th at the 37th annual BDPA Technology Conference. His workshop will cover several initiatives and areas to ensure your IT strategy is well-founded. By looking at these initiatives, you can identify critical gaps in your strategy execution processes and focus on the most important choices you must make. He will also cover results from the latest CIO survey. Survey results suggest IT leaders are increasingly taking action to market IT and to build and solidify relationships with their non-IT stakeholders.

Message from the BDPA Cincinnati Chapter President

Dalric Webb
Spring is in the air and the BDPA team of volunteers are busy as bees!

I represented Cincinnati Chapter at the 2015 BDPA Midwest Region chapter president's meeting held in Chicago on March 21-22. The meeting allowed us to leverage best practices, lessons learned and networking with other key leaders including National BDPA president Pamela Mathews and vice president Mike Williams. As the second largest chapter in the nation (out of 46 chapters) Cincinnati was tapped to host the 2017 Midwest Region president's meeting! We look forward to hosting all the leaders here in the 'Queen City'!

Congratulations to all the students who completed the 12-week computer camp held at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College (CinState)! Your commitment, dedication, determination, and positive attitudes made helping you learn the 'code' of technology that will change the world, an awesome experience for all the instructors! Please visit our computer camp website to see some of the fine work these up and coming technologists have developed. We move on to the second phase of the training program with a smaller team invited to compete in both the regional and national High School Computer Competitions. Our team should be prepared to compete for trophies and college scholarships at the 37th annual BDPA Technology Conference in Washington DC.

We had a FANTASTIC 'meet and greet' last month at Margaritaville. The event was well attended and everyone in attendance had a great time. We appreciate BDPA member Malik Spencer for sharing his Salsa line-dancing expertise with our attendees.

Babacar Guisse
BDPA Cincinnati chapter successfully celebrated its 10th Annual Awards Luncheon this weekend! All of the chapter's corporate sponsors from 2014 were recognized. CinState earned the award as '2014 Corporate Sponsor of the Year' -- the highest award given to any corporation. Babacar Guissé was named '2014 Member of the Year' -- the highest award given to any member.

Other winners announced during the event included:
- Michael Pulliam (Quest Diagnostics) was named '2014 Director of the Year'
- Wayne Hicks (Hicks Enterprises) was named '2014 Executive Officer of the Year'
- Frank Hill (Cincinnati State) won the '2014 Community Service Award'
- Deborah Prince (xpedx) won the '2014 Spirit Award'

I encourage you to attend our next monthly program meeting on 4/15/15 to join our discussion on '3D Printing: The Promise of Tomorrow'. We will have a 3D printer on hand to provide examples of this new technology. Light refreshments will be available.

Shelton Graves
Our board of volunteers continues to grow as we welcomed Shelton Graves (North American Properties) on as our chapter's Marketing Department director. Shelton seeks to enhance the marketing presence of the BDPA chapter – making BDPA a household name in Cincinnati. There are still a few more volunteering opportunities that can use your support. Send me an email or  give me a call on (513) 549-6991 and let’s chat about it.

2015 is off to a FANTASTIC start! Membership continues to grow with the chapter growing over 200 members during the first quarter of the year. We hope to continue that trend with the active engagement of our members. Remember, this is YOUR organization. What are you looking to get out of it? What are you putting into it to obtain those results? Are you engaged? Did you attend the last program meeting? The last social? The last computer camp session? Have you chatted with President-Elect Shawnda Peterson about her thoughts and plans for her upcoming presidency in 2016-2017? The chapter is ACTIVE in our communities – we’d love to have you be active with us.

Looking forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming events!

Sincerely,
Dalric Webb, President
BDPA Cincinnati Chapter
