The BDPA Education & Technology Foundation seized the opportunity to launch our YouTube Channel earlier this month.

YouTube is a powerful medium used to broadcast the BDPA Foundation Cause to a large and growing online video community. Here is an example of the information we can share through our BETF YouTube Channel.

Healthcare IT and Integrated Solutions (No. Delaware)

BDPA Northern Delaware is less than a year old as a BDPA chapter. As such, it is remarkable to note that they are the 20th largest BDPA chapter in the nation. One reason for their success is an aggressive effort to market the chapter through monthly program meetings. The chapter presents 'Healthcare IT and Integrated Solutions' as topic for their upcoming program meeting.

The presenter is Timothy Brown, staffing manager with Siemens Medical Solutions. He has been a featured speaker on the development of strategic staffing metrics and serves on the Board of Directors for the Direct Employers Association, the Chester County Workforce Investment Board and the SHRM Staffing Management Panel. Mr. Brown is a certified Six Sigma Green Belt, with strength in developing and implementing sustainable talent acquisition processes. He completed his HR Certificate at Cornell University and is beginning his Masters in Human Resource Development at Villanova University.

Cincinnati Team Wins Midwest Regional Computer Competition!

Congratulations to Team CHAOS (Cincinnati Holds All Opposition Speechless)! The five youngsters from Cincinnati took home the gold medal from the 2008 Midwest Regional High School Computer Competition (HSCC) on Saturday, June 7, 2008 at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College.

Left to right - DeRicco Swan, senior at Withrow International. Brandon Bowen, senior at Clark Montessori High School, Simeon Ellis, sophomore at Cincinnati’s Creative and Performing Arts, Brook Hines, sophomore at Lakota High School, Raynisha Greene, sophomore at Cincinnati’s Creative and Performing Arts.

The event drew representation from the following BDPA chapters: Atlanta (silver medal), Chicago, Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton (bronze medal), Detroit, Indianapolis and Middle Tennessee.

Identity Theft: How Secure is Your Credit Using Today's Technology (Dallas)

BDPA Dallas is the 11th largest chapter in the nation. One reason for their success is an aggressive program meeting schedule. The June 2008 program meeting is being hosted by Louis Carr, chief information officer of the City of Arlington.

The meeting topic is "Identity Theft: How Secure is Your Credit Using Today's Technology". The meeting presenter is Maurice Green. Mr. Green is a native Texan, and has over 15 years experience in the financial industry. He is the founder and President of GATT Financial Services. After being victimized by identity-theft himself he vowed to dedicate his time, efforts and experience to assist others victimized by identity thieves as well as those who have made bad financial decisions.

Message from Columbus Chapter President

Cecil Jones is the president of the BDPA Columbus chapter. I first met Cecil at a program meeting hosted by the BDPA Cincinnati chapter back in 1999. He has been an active and vocal supporter of BDPA ever since I've known him. He moved to Columbus and got married in the intervening years. In 2007, he took on the challenge to serve as president of the 11th largest chapter in the nation.

He recently shared this message with his chapter members and supporters:

"A HUGE Thanks! goes out to Jim Locke, Kym Miller, Lance Livingstonston, our Columbus HSCC students and parents. The 2008 Midwest Regional High School Computer Competition held last weekend in Cincinnati was a success!!

Additionally, we need a volunteer to call and work with the following people (one person per bullet). Just one easy task.

• Associate Dean, Engineering College, Dr. Minnie McGee at OSU - call her and ask how we can get her Engineering students involved in the our chapter and in HSCC. Dr. McGee is the mother of our one our JPMorgan Chase sponsors. I worked on an OSU Scholarship committee with her. Anyone volunteering for this assignment would be blessed to work with this dedicated sister.


• Technology Education College on Winchester Pike - I met with them last night. They have students that should be BDPA members. I will give you the Director's name and number. They are ready for us.


• BDPA member who was the past president of a LARGE Devry Black student organization - work with with to tell Devry about BDPA and our meetings.

One of our challenges is the same as many organizations. We have 10% of the members doing 90% of the work. If you are one of the 90% that are not engaged, please volunteer for ONE task - just one - and our organization will more effectively fulfill its mission. Please email me or call me to get engaged.

Here is my personal testimony on the power of being a BDPA volunteer:

1. BDPA helped me fulfill one of my spiritual obligations ('help others').


2. The relationships obtained working with BDPA has helped me financially (contracts and services - ask me how,!).


3. It has helped in preparing for various IT certifications.


4. Call me and ask me how it helped me move from one organization to another within 3 weeks including the 2 week notice via BDPA members and sponsors (three different times; build your well before you need to use it).


5. After speaking on a panel during one of our BDPA meetings, I was offered (a) an adjunct professorship and (b) a contract. Neither required an interview.


6. By volunteering to interact with sponsors and others, I have obtained board memberships that allow me to learn, serve and financially benefit.

Election Results: Wanda McCaster (Cincinnati)

Congratulations to Wanda McCaster on her recent election as the 2008-2009 president-elect for BDPA Cincinnati chapter. Wanda currently works as a project manager for Kelly Services. I've known the sister for many moons. In fact, I'm pretty sure that I appointed her to her first BDPA leadership position back in 2000 when she became the chapter's VP-Membership Management.

Many BDPA members around the country may recall Wanda from her workshop presentations on 'Six Sigma Black Belt' and 'project management'. The lucky ones have had opportunity to taste Wanda's soul food!

When asked how she plans to make a difference as the president-elect from Cincinnati chapter, Wanda replied,

"Our board will work together as a cohesive team with the same commitment, drive, and focus on making the BDPA the best organization we can. As a board we will focus our efforts on adding value to being a member of the BDPA. Value will be seen and felt by the CAC, Board Members, Members, and Volunteers. This will allow us to drive up membership by having BDPA meet and greet at corporations, increase corporate sponsorship, increase corporate memberships; Increase student memberships by visiting schools; increase BDPA monthly and special events, and more importantly by word of mouth from our members!"

Grant Recipient: BDPA New York ($2,500)

The BDPA Foundation approved $ 2,500 grant funding to BDPA New York chapter. The funds will be used to support chapter participation in the Northeast Regional HSCC (Newark NJ) and Mid-Atlantic Regional HSCC (Washington DC). Remaining funds will support participation for chapter HSCC students, chaperones and coordinator at the national competition in Atlanta, GA on August 8-9, 2008.

BETF provided full funding for this $2,500 request submitted by the chapter last month.

This funding request was supported by a recent MetLife volunteer grant. We need others to step-up and make tax-deductible donation to the BDPA Foundation so that we might continue to fund these programs in the future. It is important for us to have funds necessary to advance the careers of African Americans in the IT industry from the 'classroom to the boardroom'.

Data Warehousing and Business Intelligence (Los Angeles)

BDPA Los Angeles is the 15th largest chapter in the nation. One reason for their success is their ability to retain the time, energy and talents of their chapter leaders over the course of many years. Nowhere is this more evident than this month's program meeting when we have past chapter president Narvin Yarbrough (2005-2006) and Angela White-Parker (2001-2004) teaming up to present, 'Data Warehousing and Business Intelligence'.

This presentation will focus on ways that Corporate America is using technology to deal with business problems. Program meeting attendees will discover how companies analyze and solve these business problems with data warehouses. Also, the presenters will share how company executives use business intelligence monitoring tools and techniques to identify trends as part of effort to make quality business decisions.

Grant Recipient: BDPA Philadelphia ($568)

The BDPA Foundation approved $ 568 grant funding to BDPA Philadelphia chapter. The funds will be used to assist procurement of lodging for chapter HSCC students and chaperones during the national competition in Atlanta, GA in August 5-10, 2008.

BETF provided partial funding. The initial request from the chapter was for $3,375. The chapter will look towards its 'virtual cash account', corporate sales and coupon book fundraiser to make up the difference.

'Yes We Can' Says Linnie Bailey

Linnie Bailey was chapter president of BDPA Washington DC chapter in the mid-1980s. She moved to California and became the founder of BDPA Inland Empire chapter in the early-1990s. Our chapter in the Inland Empire wasn't able to sustain itself into the 21st century.

Linnie moved her energy and passion in other directions. Eventually, she became part of the movement and the moment that helped Barack Obama win the Democratic nomination.

We learned today that our $15,000 grant proposal to Turner Broadcasting Systems on behalf of our BDPA Atlanta chapter has been turned down.

TBS wrote, "Although the purpose of your organization and the services it provides is extremely valuable, they do not line up with Turner's corporate contribution targets ... We wish you much success as you move forward and hope you are able to obtain the funds you require from other sources."

We are pleased to report that the Microsoft Employee Giving Campaign matched a $500 donation made earlier in the year by one of their associates, Kevin Robinson. Kevin is a longtime corporate member of BDPA Charlotte chapter. Microsoft matches employee donations on a 1:to:1 basis. This matching fund supports the BDPA Foundation Endowment Fund.

Midwest Regional High School Computer Competition (Cincinnati)

The Midwest High School Computer Competition will be held this Saturday, June 7th at Cincinnati State from 8 :00am - 5:30pm. BDPA Cincinnati chapter is the host of this year's regional event. It is anticipated that 57 students will be participating in this event.

The following BDPA Chapters are participating: Atlanta, Chicago, Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton, Detroit, Indianapolis and Nashville TN.

This is an all day event held at Cincinnati State located off on Central Parkway. The opening, oral competition and award presentation are open to the public. The written and programming sessions are closed.

Smart Card Technology (New Jersey)

BDPA New Jersey is the 12th largest chapter in the nation. One reason for their success is a consistent willingness to share the talents of their membership with the national organization. For example, one BDPA New Jersey Chapter leader, Coram Rimes, will be making a presentation at this year's National BDPA Conference in Atlanta, GA on the topic of Smart Card Technology. Coram is the National Building Security Director for Prudential. He agreed to give a sneak peek of what he will be presenting to his chapter colleagues this month.

A smart card is defined as any pocket-sized card with embedded integrated circuits which can process information. These tiny devices can receive input which is then processed and delivered as output.

During the presentation Coram will discuss the following topic points:

We Need $2,500...

BDPA Foundation provides Jesse Bemley Scholarships to the top five teams at the national high school computer competition (HSCC) event held at the annual BDPA Technology Conference each year.

We want to provide the Bemley Scholarship to the 6th place team this year at the national competition in Atlanta, GA on August 6-9, 2008.

This is the challenge given to us by high school senior Monique Jones. Monique’s Charlotte HSCC team came in 6th place last year at the competition in Washington DC last year. She wrote, “In 2007, a new policy was opened. Instead of scholarship going to the top three high scoring chapters, they would be awarded to the top five. That year we came in 6th place, just 30 points short of scholarships for the whole team.”

Is it time to reward the 6th place team? That choice is yours to make. If we can raise $2,500 in this campaign … we will do so!

I resisted the constant pressure to join Facebook for many years. However, last month I joined Facebook as part of effort to promote the BDPA Foundation. I have been pleasantly surprised by the usefulness of this social network.

I have made connections with high school friends, college friends, BDPA colleagues, Black bloggers, BDPA keynote speakers and BDPA High School Computer Competition alumni. However, I haven't found many relatives online yet.
